Default Whining sound, most noticable in 5th/6th gear on acceleration

My car is pretty much stock other then 4.10 gears. I get a whining sound on acceleration which is most noticable in 5th and 6th gear. I dont think its the rear end because the pitch changes depending on what gear its in. I do notice the whine when im WOT in the other gears but its most noticable in 5th and 6th (maybe because the rpms are up there in the trans?) What do you guys think? Note its only on accel or steady rpm, not decel.

Thanks
dave

I think Mean Green had either the same or a similar problem with his Lingenfelter C5 back around August. The search function may or may not help.

i recall that and it sounds just like his did. Do you recall if it was motor or rear related?

I think it was the rear.

i found it. it was his rear and trans. Im pretty confident its the trans as it only happens in certain gears and the pitch changes based on gear. Im thinking of changing the trans fluid, maybe its low who knows

well the car is under warranty so thats why im trying to see if anyone else has had this problem. I want to ensure its not the rear before taking it in for warranty work. Im going to try some new syntetic atf to see if it makes any difference.

I'll bet it is your rear differential.

if it was the rear diff though why would the whine change depending on gear? If im going the same speed the pitch is different in 5th and 6th.

Does it start at about 40 get louder and louder to about 75 then at about 80-90 it's almost silent and comes back even louder at 120? If so...it's your diff. I'm going through that right now...i just put 3.73's in my car and they started howling right at about 450 easy miles

I have 4.10s and I have noticed it recently. I hear it when I'm cruising on the highway. If I let off the gas, no noise at all.

Apparently there's several factors that affect differential noise.

1.) Ring and Pinion Alignment
2.) Ring and PinionTeeth Shape
3.) How hard the Ring and Pinion are/wear in patterns
4.) and of course the obvious...fluids.

ive had the rear in for 10k miles now and this noise just started happening. The wear pattern on the gears was fine last i checked about 50 miles ago.

well the rear has new fluid in it and new friction modifier so im going to try changing the fluid in the trans. I took it out and I've always had a bit of a higher pitch whine WOT in the lower gears and that is still there but the noise im concerned about is primarily in 5th and 6th. Being I have a convertible its kind of hard to hear but it seems the noise starts around 65 or so and im not sure but it may go away above 90 mph. And the pitch seems loudest in 6th. It sounds just like the whine you get in your trans when downshifting into 1st while rolling but a lower pitch tone and louder. That 1st gear whine while downshifting into first has gotten VERY loud too. Im wondering if somehow my shifter boot isnt doing it job even though its on there tight.
