Does running a bit rich increase popping on decel?
I have a vortex and Kooks w/ cats and stingers. My car gurgles and pops a whole bunch on deceleration. It's never been re-tuned and runs a bit rich at WOt... about 11.5/1. Would getting it leaned out a bit decrease the popping?
Going to call Chris at ECS Monday to discuss specs. I have a few things to knock out first, but I'll probably get one this summer after the CI6. We'll have to hang out if I come up that way. I'll get Ryan to come too.
I enjoy the sound. Sounds mean and let's people know I mean business.
Personally, I don't like the sound. My '04 setup is similar: Kook's LTs, cats, x-pipe, and Halltech Stinger. On decel, my Vett sounds like a 1952 Ford dump truck. I'd very much like to eliminate the pops and crackles.
My other car is a dodge diesel with 4" straight pipe. The vette is mild compared to that thing. It's all a matter of personal preference though. Some like it, some don't. I guess that's what makes this country so great.
Your problems on the surging and crackling are tuning issues. You need to get a scan tune to eliminate those poblems. It will not only sound better but it will also run better. A scan tune consists of a 20-30 minute road test with logging software and using that data to retune the PCM to eliminate the rich/lean conditions. There are 22 parameters the computer uses in the engine management process. They cover from start up to warm engine to highway cruising to rush hour driving to WOT to decel.
Backfire like that is not cause by rich conditions, its cause be LEAN conditions. Moreover, you being rich at WOT doesnt have anything to do with decel! You arent WOT on decel so why even mention it. Its the decel table that is a bit lean.
I wouldn't call it backfire... it's just lots of popping ang gurgling on decel, more so than befor I added the Kooks w/ x-pipe. The only thing that's changed is the car runs a bit richer up top.
Cobra,
My popping on deceleration was greatly reduced during the dyno tune by having the spark slightly advanced at decel. Cleared about 80% of the popping. Sometimes I kinda miss it. I do think that it sounds mean, but does get annoying after a while.
