Inspect your column lock harness. If the four wires in your ECL harness are Orange, Purple, Green, Black on both sides of the connector, then you DO NOT have the recall mod installed. If you have White, Purple, Green, Black on either side of the connector, then you DO have the recall mod. All the 2002 6-speeds should not have the K-Harness, but yours apparently has. Trace the K-Harness back to the footwell passenger side and remove it, Install the C of H CLB.
Who knew? I got this message "Service Control Lock" then checked the manual, which was not much help. Was able to drive 45 miles to get home. Your information is very helpful!
If the dealer did the recall mod after you had your custom tune put in, you may have lost your tune.
The most obvious failure post recall is the K Harness relay that the dealer installed. It's almost identical to the aftermarket CLB except it uses an inferior relay. My advice is to remove the K Harness and replace it with a CLB from Corvettes of Houston (COH). After that you should be okay.
BTW if any of you folks have a failed K Harness relay, please send it to me so I can do failure analysis on it and possibly spec a high quality replacement which then should make the K Harness mod acceptable for us to use.
Cheers,
John
John,
send me your shipping address. I just removed the .... ummmm.... "device".
Results for the other forum members that are having issues. 98 auto. Dealer mod done (per them). Had "pull key and wait" then... "Service Column Lock" message. Steering wheel still locked.
Jammed wheel back and forth but NG. Removed fuse 25 but NG (but that DID give me the "wait 10 sec msg" again). Took dash apart using the install instructions to install a CLB.
Found a big-A$$ white relay (Tyco is manf) and a two wire male/female connector. Disconnected this patch cord/relay assem and reconnected the male/female to each other and now no message. Ordering a CLB NOW to aleviate this in the future.
So, it really does look like these relays are crap. John, again I'll send this assemb to you.
Would someone be kind enough to post instructions on how to remove the K harness? Something more detailed than "get under your dashboard and remove it."
I have searched all these posts and haven't found any. If I missed them, please point to them. Thank you!!
okay so my 97 a4 is stranded in my driveway... i call up the dealer.. they say they will do it free if there actually was a recall on my car... they ask for the VIN, look it up... and they tell me there was no recall whatsoever on this car... according to what i read, it says ALLLLL 97 a4 models have this recall... yet dealer says it was only on certain models, and with the VIN, it says there is no recall.... is this true??
My '99 C5 auto had the recall done years ago by a prior owner. Soon after having a local tuner add a procharger, the service column lock and remove key messages come on and the fuel shuts off at 2 mph. My tuner removed the fuel shutoff program so I could drive the car to the dealer. The dealer replaced the older recall version steering column lock module, removed the K harness and charged me about $400. This did not fix the problem. The dealer says there is nothing more they can do. My tuner and SCT are out of solutions. Anyone know how to get the service column lock and remove key messages to go away?
There is so much information on this subject now with all these various GM recalls, that it's hard to keep it all straight.
So, here's a couple of simple questions to get back to basics.
Can a CLB kit be installed with no ill effects on a 2002 with 6-speed that has never had any GM recalls done on the column lock issue?
Also, can the CLB be removed and the column lock be easily put back to stock configuration if so desired?
Yes to both questions. Get the Corvettes of Houston CLB and install it like the instructions say. I mounted mine on the bolster frame rail near the steering wheel. Very easy to re-connect the stock harness if necessary. Mine is also a 2002 Z06.

John,
Email me and I'll help you get this figured out, but please don't take it to the dealer anymore for this issue.

Thanks corvetteforum! Saved me a lot of $ at the dealer. I used the "jerk the hell out of it" method to unlock and I have a CLB on the way from Corvettes of Houston.

Exactly how that "jerk the hell out of it method"?
The deed is done! Got my CLB yesterday and just installed it. Installation was easy, I used the cigarette lighter adapter that came with the COH kit but this link that I found here was extremely helpful: http://www.ls1howto.com/index.php?article=24
Took less than an hour and that's only because I went about it methodically. No error codes or pulling of fuses were required. I feel better now and am not worried about the car shutting down. My car did have the fuel shut-off recall done to it by the previous owner, I figure while it's off the road this winter I'll have that taken care of through a mail order tune. Thanks corvetteforum.
So I scanned all 27 pages and don't think I saw the answer to my question.
Got the Service Column Lock error, and the pull key and hope for a miracle error. Tried both keys, no difference.
This is an 02 Z06. The previous owner had a PCM reflash with one of the supposed fixes flashed into it in 03 or 04. It has never given me any trouble until today. It has 39K on it.
I have a custom dyno tune in the PCM so I really don't want it reflashed. I may possibly have a weak battery. I'm on my way to get a fresh one now. Just incase...
So after pulling the BCM fuse I got it to reset. Now the steering column is not locked. But I am still getting the Service Column Lock error and it is cutting off the fuel at 2mph on me. I've left the spare key in the ignition in the unlock (not on) position. So if I get a CLB and install it will this all clear itself out and go away or am I stuck letting the dealer fix it and then install a CLB?

Me like you, was scared of this, but Im telling you DONT WASTE TIME, just buy the CLB and you will install it in a couple of minutes and all your problems will solved!

Not scared of doing the install. I work on my car all the time. Wanted to know if after I freed up the column, but still got service column lock, will it clear installing the CLB.
Last night I put in a brand new battery. Took the 1yr old battery back to Autozone. They tested it and said it was good, then recharged and tested, still good. I told them no way and wanted a new battery. Well I got one. Installed it. Problem went away. I started and drove the car last night to test out my new exhaust. I just ordered the CLB from CoH. The Z06 will sit for a few days until I get the part and install it. Just to make sure I don't get stung.
Btw, The local Chevy dealer warranty/recall/whatever person. She said she had never heard of Service Column Lock being a problem. Other than 5+ years ago. It would not be fixed under any program other than my credit card...
I just had a module replaced in my 98 vette. It would start but died when I put it in gear and rolled 5 or 6 feet. Cost me $400. Does this have anything to do with your post? They said it was part of an anti theft system. Thanks Mike
