Sold my 2001 ZO6. Bought a 2000 Nassau Blue with no miles. Installed a vararam and Corsa catback with sharktips. Can anyone tell me how to boost this LS1 to around 500 HP with out the use of a supercharger, or would the SC be the least expensive way to go. And which unit. I was looking at the ProCharger P-1SC-1 After owning the O6 the stock LS1 just does not cut it. Any and all info would be appreciated!
Thx,
Tim.
If you're not aware, there's a whole separate section for Forced Induction/Nitrous here on the forum. You can see lots of opinions there.
The debate of how to add that kind of power is long and likely never-ending. The good news is there are lots of alternatives and there is a lot more power out there now than there was 3 years ago. I have an '01 coupe and thought about trading it for a Z06 a few years ago, but that loss in value on my '01 would've been big and I thought it'd be fun to have something unique, so I went the supercharger route. I have no regrets, but also after reading the boards for the 2 years since, I still can't say that anyone has proven a clear winner between a heads/cam combo or a supercharger or a turbo setup. Also, if you go forced induction, there's plenty of debate there about what's the best as well. So, just read up and see if you can't find some member cars to ride in or a tuner or two to visit, and hopefully that will start you down the road of your preference.
One last thing: if you want better zip in the car, you could always change the rear gears and if it's an auto tranny you can get a higher stall converter. However, if you do these first, you still have to guess a to what else you might do in the future, as too high a gear or too high a stall may not work optimally with a future big horsepower adder, depending on what type of adder you choose.
Assuming you're talking about flywheel HP, you can go with a head/cam package and get 500 HP. You can find them offered by a supporting tuner for $6000-$8000 installed. I went with a package from 21st Century Muscle Cars. I'm very happy with my decision and I'm at 495 HP with LS1 heads. If I would have gone with LS6 heads, I would be over 500 HP no problem.
