I have read several posts about people putting Z06 sway bars etc... on their C5's, I assume that this is due to larger diameter sway bars on the Z making it that much more stiff...but how does that compare to the Z51 option?
I have the Z51 package (not sure what all that includes) in my 97...is the Z06 suspension package that much better or is this upgrade done merely on cars purchased without the Z51 option?
A guy recently did this and posted up that he felt it was waste of time. He posted a pic of the difference in bar diameter and it was 1-2 mm thicker on the Z06 for one (not sure whether it was front or back), and the other was the same thickness. If you have the Z51 go for either Hotchkis or T1 sway bars....however, if you have the crappy plastic endlinks instead of the aluminum ones I would get the alum ones and put them on first with the Z51 bars and see what you think.
I am not planning an upgrade myself to my 97 as I feel the Z51 is more then enough for the type of driving I do (not an auto-x'r) but was more curious as to what the difference was between Z06 and Z51...or if the Z51 was an option on a Z06...
I had an 84 Z51 a few years ago...and it knocked my teeth out over bumps! this 97 seems to be as stiff, but more forgiving if that is possible!? All in all- I absolutely love the C5, it is a work of genious if you ask me!
As Vette history goes, the 84 Z51 was the most bone jarring platform ever put under one. It's documented in a number of places. I had an 84 Z51 too. At times I think that it was stickier than my C5 Z51, but I haven't really pushed the 98 yet.
Z06 is a step above the Z51, so that suspension isn't an option with it.
I just replace the sway bar from my Z51 with a Z06 sway bar (front end only). I will tell you, there is a noticable difference. Much flatter in the corners. Personally, I like it.
