Ok i just wana be sure on this. As it is my first 6 speed car. I have a 2000 c5 M6. Local parts store says to use regular ATF in it. Is this the case? And how much to fill it?
I'd recommend Synthetic ATF over regular, but that's up to you. You'll also need either a fluid pump or some type of squeeze bottle system to get the ATF up into the transmission. You can get a cheap fluid pump at your auto parts store. I don't really think its that messy to change the fluid. Drain the old fluid like you would the oil, then pump the new fluid up into the fill hole. It will take just under 4 quarts. After you've got 3 1/2 quarts in, go slower and when it starts to run out the fill hole, stop and put the plug in. After you've done it once or twice, its fast and easy to do.
You will need a pump to suction the fluid out of the tranny since the drain is located on the side of the pumpkin but that is not a big deal, and you can use the same pump to refill it. Just refill until it starts to run out and you are done. It only becomes messy if you spill it. I use the GM Synchormesh fluid and it really makes a difference in the feel of the shifts.
There's recently been a couple threads about using some of the synthetics ATF's such as Red Line D4 and Mobil 1 in pre 2001 C5's. The nay sayers claim the synthetics are more slippery and will burn up the paper blockers on the gears, although there is not a whole lot of evidence on this. From doing a lot of reading on ATF fluids over the years, I find that one important feature of an ATF is its friction characteristics so it will work properly with the clutch packs in an auto transmission. With some brands, you should only use the type of ATF they speicfy. Now, if Red Line D4 and Mobil 1 synthetic ATF are properly formulated for "friction characteristic" to work in an automatic transmission (all of them?), I don't know whether they would be too slipery for the paper blockers in the T56. Whaddaya think?
Went to Napa, Advance and Autozone and no one carry Mobil 1 synthetic ATF! Where do you guys get them? BTW, anyone has any comment on the above post by 2kbluestreak? Thanks.
