Saw your write up for adjusting the E brake good job & thanks. But my ? regards how does it actually work by that I mean it appears that when pull the brake on the little lever on the backing plate moves up and engages the star wheel and the brake is set. Conversely when you release the brake the lever is pushed downward and the brake is released. The spring inside the drum I thought was simply to hold the shoes in place and have no function relative to setting or releasing the brake. Your input would be appreciated.

The only part that auto adjusts is the slack in the cable...If your shoe to drum clearance is too great, adjusting using your auto adjust feature will not work,... you need to manually adjust the star to a point where you can not get the drum over the shoes and then back off a click or two until you feel a slight drag... when your done, your ebrake lever should reach lock-up at between 40 and 45 degrees from horizontal.. and should release at 30 to 35 degrees....
I believe when I made that tip, I was not as clear as I should have been, and there is no way of editing it..
Most ebrakes are not adjusted properly from the factory. when they are done right, you rarely need to adjust them again unless you leave the parking brake engaged and drive off.. Once the ebrake is adjusted properly, you won't be able to drive off with it engaged..I did mine (adjusted it ) five years ago when the car had 1500 miles on it... I have never had to adjust it again and I have a very positive lock up at 45 degrees... that as 55,000 miles ago too.
Sorry for the confusion...
I dont point to that link just because it is confusing..

Evil Twin understand your reply but does the little lever on the backing plate simply move the star wheel a click or two to set and push the star wheel the other direction to release when enerything is assembled.

FWIW I have seen on occassion the parking brake not auto-adjusting. On multiple cars I have seen the lubricating grease on the parking brake lever auto-adjusting mechanism solidify due to extreme tunnel temperatures, causing the ratchet not to work properly. If attempts are made to get a firm parking brake are not corrected by adjusting parking brake shoe to drum clearance, look into this . I have seen this too many times to be ignored.
If this is the case remove parking brake lever assy and inspect operation of self-adjuster. if not working properly wipe all solidified grease away and work penetrant oil into mechanisms until free. Then lubricate again with good high-temp grease.
