I have a 2003 coupe and I cannot find the dam fuel filter. I know they changed the fuel system on 2003 in the mid year. How do I tell what fuel system I have. I beleive the later 2003's have the same system as the 2004. I beleive I read some where that the fuel filter is inside the gas tank. That seems crazy that you have to drop the gas tank to change the fuel filter. Any help greatly appreciated because I was underneath that car for an hour and found nothing. Also I guess it would be nice to find out what fuel system I have because I am going with a supercharger setup and do I use a kenne bell boost a pump or an aftermarket fuel pump.
Thats a good question. I am sure someone has some knowledge on this. Or maybe all the guys dont have enough miles on there 2003's to worry about changing their fuel filter.
Mine filter is driver side rear, above the tranny on an A4. WAY up there!!
It's a 98

I thought the fuel filter was still above the frame rail next to the rear tire on the driver's side. I have a 2004. I will go check and report if I cannot find it. The 2003 service manual only shows one location, above the frame. One clue that the filter is not inside the tank is that the 2004 shows to use the same fuel filter as the earlier years, GM #10299146, AC GF822.

Thanks alot guys
It was a running change in mid-2003, moving the fuel filter inside the fuel tank. The move was forced by federal mandate because of the possibility that the filter outside the tank could leak fumes.
It was for that reason that I went looking for a solid 2001 -- early build 2003 when I wanted to buy a C5. I have had to change a few fuel filters through the decades of owning cars. It's a stupid rule promulgated by the EPA.

On a 97 like mine it is tucked up in the frame on the drivers side. It is an inline filter.
The 99 and up have the regulator combined with the filter, all one unit.
The 99 up fuel rails have a pulse damper there,( looks just like the 97/98 regulator).
99 and up only have a single fuel line,97 - 98 have two, because one of them is a return directly off the regulator.
I can't recall which tank it is in, I am sure someone here can.

I have found out that 2003 with vin#111,000 & after have the fuel fillter in the tank. You can tell by look in the glove box you will have I think its FFS . I also belive that the filter is good for 100,000 miles. Hopefully some with technical knowledge will chime in. Good luck finding out how to change it.
When I said the filter was the same as earlier years, I meant 2002-03, not all the way back ot 1998. Your note confirms that the 99-04 filter is the same.
Is everyone saying that GM kept the filter the same and just moved it inside the fuel tank?
It is hard to believe they would not change the design if they moved it to inside the tank.
Anyone have a service manual that shows this?
The fuel filter for the mid 2003-06 is part of the left fuel sender/pump assembly inside the left tank and is not serviced short of replacing the sender/pump assembly

Don't know if I'll keep our '03 or get a new one. Good to know if I keep it our early '03 can be serviced.
