Default lost 2nd gear

It pops out of second gear when I release the clutch. If I hold it in it grinds the gears. Every other gear is fine. What's the problem? Is this going to cost me a lot of money??

Thanks in advance

What condition is the car in? Modified? Mileage? Driven hard or babied? These things may help us diagnose your issue such as a worn out clutch maybe.

It has 25k miles, not modified other than a Blackwing. occasionaly driven hard, definitely not babied, and it is a daily driver.

there's these little things called slider keys in the trans, and when one of them breaks it either locks your car in gear or it causes it to pop out of gear. I had this problem twice with my ss, and both times it was the slider keys.
here is a link to where you can buy billet slider keys (the stock one's are stamped steel)
http://www.ddperformance.com/t56_partsupgrades.htm
funny thing is, that when I opened up my trans the only thing that was wrong was one broken slider key out of 3 of them . so I put the stock steel keys back in ($6 bucks from dealer) and traded it in for my vette the next day . for who ever does your trans make sure you have those billet keys put in cause that is a weekness on t56's.
good luck

Time to put the CAGS back in until you get it fixed

How occasionaly? when you often downshift in to second and punch it, if you throw it 2 hard you can mess your gear synchro. Im not sure what it takes to fix. Hope your under warrenty. Good luck with repairs.

they will tell you it needs a complete rebuild, so about 2k or so.
if your gonna spend that much to rebuild it do a search online and get a new one for around the same price.

I finally brought it into the dealer today. They estimate around $3200 for repairs, with about $1700 in parts. They said they want $5100 for new transmission. I am screwed.

Anyone want to buy a broken vette?

If I keep driving it, will the other gears break also?? The dealer of course said that they would. I am planning on driving to Minneapolis next week. Think thats a bad idea??? I have driven it for over a month and it has been fine with every other gear.

Thanks everyone.

Get another quote from a reputable transmission shop that is familar with the t56. I suspect it would be considerably cheaper than dealer, however do some research on the shop and ask questions like how many of these transmissions have you seen, look at their shop, etc. My reverse pops out and a local shop came up with around $1500 +/- depending on what parts were needed. Most of the $1500 is labor. I too have been living with it. But mine is strictly a local drive in and around Oklahoma.

As far as driving to Minneapolis?????????????

Arrange to have it pulled locally and ship it to me. I can sell you one ready to go with all of the upgrades avaliable. MANY forum members have went this way and I don't think any have regreted it.

Is it hard to pull a transmission out? I have access to tools and a lift, but I'm not a mechanic.

Crashed 94 - How much for a rebuilt one?

If you have a lift its just a matter of turnin bolts. Lets face it, its not rocket science. Its a good opportunty to learn. Buy a book, and rely on your CF brothers and pull that biatch out of there. its easier than you think
