I will be pulling my sway bars and need to lube the rubber bushings. Is there a grease type lubricant that can be used and not attach the rubber. Thanks. Lets go to the track. 99 Nassau Blue
The only problem with running them dry is as the sway bar flexes, the bushings have a fiber core, this core wears the paint off the sway bars, after a while rust builds up at this point, the rust impregnates the bushing core and wears. Do not use any Petro based greases as they will attack the rubber... Di-electric grease or a grease designed for this purpose from GM. Anyone who has had the squeaking sway bar problem and has fixed it them self has seen this rust build up...
I've had great luck with Energy Suspension's Prelube.
"Formula 5 Prelube is a versatile, waterproof, non-melting grease containing teflon.
Formula 5 Prelube forms a tough, durable, chemical resistant firm of lubricant
that prevents metal-to-metal contact even under sever shock loads.
Only a small amount is required to properly lubricate and prevent corrosion."
I found the diaelectric clear silicon based lubricant. I removed both front and rear sway bar bushings. (easy) Cleaned the rubber with soap and warm water and a brush. I cleaned all the black rubber powder. Then I drilled a 1/8" hole to allow lubricant to be added through the center of the cap. The bushings were prelubed with the clear grease and reinstalled. I also used liquid silicon spray liquid on the front spring end rubber bushings. The noise almost gone. But,, there is still the nusance squeek from the right rear. (I think it is a shock). If I adjust the ride to performance there is no squeek. I priced a new shock and it is a shock.. about $500 / shock. Does anyone know where I can find a better deal.?
I will talk to the dealer tomorrow about the shock and see what gives on it. Thanks to all who helped. Jim 99 Nassau blue
I've heard on another car that for rubber to use John Deer CornHead grease, available from your john deer dealer. Apparently it is water proof and it does not attack rubber.
I tried about 5 different types of lube..... only silicone grease worked for more than 4 weeks. Make sure you clean and dry the bushings and the bar. Did mine almost 1.5 years ago, and no noise since.
The sway bars are now lubricated with diaelectric clear grease. I also put a 1/8" hole in the back plate so more can be added later if necessary. However the squeek persist therefore I don't believe it is in the sway bar bushings. I did notice when I switch the ride control from the normal cruise setting to performance it does not squeek. Granted the suspension doesn't flex as much due to the tighter system. But now I am wondering if it is the shocks. If the selector is moved to the normal position the squeek returns. Could this be a dry upper shock o-ring at the top seal? If you keep the speed over 30 mph you can't hear the sqeek. Thanks squeeking along.
