Default Fuel Filter on a C5

Fuel filter- How often should it be changed and how exactly do you change it? Does it just pop off or how do you disconnect it? Anybody got some instructions on the change?

As a note, not all C5's have the same filter, or the same location as on that thread. You will need a fuel line disconnect tool which I don't see mentioned on the above post. I got mine at a local autoparts store for about $5. This tool is hinged and clamps around the fuel line and slips into into the connection to pry open the prongs holding the line to the filter.

Early C5s have a very inexpensive filter that doesn't have a pressure regulator built into the them. In about 1999, they changed to a filter with a built in pressure regulator that is about 3 times more expensive. At some point in 2003, at least for the Z06, the filter started being placed in the fuel tank with the pump - hence you are not going to change that one.

I have replaced my filter twice now. Race fuel isn't very clean.

I suggest you look under your driver's side frame rail just in front of the left rear wheel and see if you can find your fuel filter.

For 1999 and later C5/Z06 up to mid-2003, AMSOIL lists this part as GF336. AMSOIL lists the GF341 as the correct fuel filter for 1998 and earlier C5s. Though I can't comment on AMSOIL pricing online, I will say that AMSOIL prices these Hastings filters below dealer price and comparable to gmpartsdirect.com, particularly for preferred customers.

I don't even see fuel filter listed in the 02 Z06 owner's manual as needed any service.

But, on my F350 (diesel), it must be changed every 15k miles.

I changed my fuel filter at 15k miles, two years when the car was prepped for SCCA T1, then I changed it again about a year later when I was getting indications of high rpm fuel starvation.

Depends on your fuel source. It wouldn't hurt to change every 15-20k.When you take it out you can hold it closed (ends covered) and shake it vigorously before you pour the remaining fuel out to see somewhat how contaminated it is. I'm with SUBDRIVER race fuel can be very dirty. I buy it in drums and before I was checking it (with a high quality filter on my drum pump) I partially blocked my '03 FFS fuel system filter, you know the nasty one in the tank. I had to replace it and my car only had 1400 miles. FFS fuel systems SUCK !!!! I wish my car was made one month sooner

What size quick disconnect tool would I need for a 99? Can I easily get to the filter or do I have to remove so things?

I replaced the fuel filter in my 01 Z06 at 50k miles. It was not giving me any problems and of course I did not feel any difference with the new filter.

Beware buying any cheap filters. I had got one from advanced auto and changed it right before having my car tuned. At WOT on the dyno car would not put out enough fuel pressure. Got one from the dealer the next day and all was fine.

I'm not sure of the exact size. The filter is easy to get to if you put the car up on Rhino Ramps and nothing needs to be removed to get to it.

The local autoparts store sold the fuel line disconnects in two sizes and each was only a couple of dollars, so I bought both of them and have them both in my tool box. Figured between the Vette, F350 and Chevy Trailblazer, I might have a need for both sizes.

I'm not at home now or I'd check for you, sorry.

I had trouble getting the link to load also. If anyone knows of a better link to the procedure, please post it up.

TEN-YEAR-OLD-THREAD King to the rescue!! ... I couldn't find a good link, but this is a set of instructions I saved from an unknown source. It worked well enough for me. I tried to Google several uniquely-worded sentences to find the original source, but had no luck. There ARE pictures in my own copy, I just can't figure out how to cut and paste them here, so at the bottom of this post, I've included the entire MS Word document that includes pictures. 'Thank you' to the unknown author!

FUEL FILTER REPLACEMENT
All of these installations are to be performed at your own risk!!!!
FFS system (fuel pump with integrated fuel filter) initiated on November 25, 2002, with serial number 35111542. Ours is #35113294.

The last time I changed my fuel filter on my 02 ZO6 I was at a MOD Party that we organized. I started the filter change procedure and FORGOT to bring the damn tool to release the filter!!

Determined to do the filter swap, I used one of the plastic caps that comes on the new filter. I chopped of the top of the cap, then sliced the plastic sleeve in a spiral and used that plastic sleeve to disconnect the filter! Worked very well in a pinch!

Disconnect your battery and suitably raise and support the rear of the vehicle enough that you can comfortably slide under there. The filter is located under the car on the driver side, on the side of the driveshaft (torquetube) tunnel, and the bracket is held on by one bolt. Release your gas cap, depress the Schraeder valve on the end of the driver’s side fuel rail to release pressure (use a rag to soak up fuel that comes out), then you're ready to disconnect the fuel lines.

· Clean the surrounding area around the filter before disconnecting to avoid contamination
· Disconnect the feed and return lines. You can use the proper tool (recommended) to do this or, like me, you can just carefully push in on the little tabs and it will come right off with no problems.
· Using a 10mm deep well, remove the bracket mount nut and also disconnect the feed from the outlet area.
· Cap the fuel lines if possible or just be careful not to contaminate.
· Disconnect the ground strap.
· Remove the filter from the car.
· Take off the retainers from the old filter and install them on the new filter.
Inside the inlet and outlet fuel line ends, there is a very small O ring. MAKE SURE that you look into the end of the fuel line and visibly inspect that O ring is in there. Make sure its still in there and in the O ring grove. If it isn't,,,,you will have a LEAK! Putting some lubricant on the ends of the fuel filter nipple will help get the filter seated without rolling the O rings.
· Connect the fuel feed pipe to the outlet.
· Install the new filter on the chassis and reconnect the ground. Tighten to 44 in. lbs.
· Connect the other two feeds.
· Turn ignition on for two seconds and then back off for 10 seconds.
· Turn ignition on and inspect for leaks.
