what RPM are you at in 6th gear at 65 mph? I dont use 6th till at least 80. What octane is your fuel?

You don't accelerate from 50 mph in 6th-you're lugging.
It will always knock under those circumstances.

Lugging tends to break down the oil wedge that bearings need to prevent metal to metal scraping.

Always downshift at least to 4th at 55.

Nothing wrong with driving in 6th steady state even as low as 40 mph, you just absolutely must not accelerate in 6th (unless you're doing 140 mph) literally.

No mods..Driving at 65 around 1400-1500 rpm and slowly accelerating never caused this noise before..Octane never lower then 93

Not true.

As a matter of fact, the operating manual recommends shifting into 6th gear at 50 mph. So, how do you not accelerate from 50 mph in 6th, if GM tells you to shift into 6th at 50 mph in the car's operating manual.

Here's the link (admittedly a C6, but I don't have a C5 manual in pdf format): http://www.greathound.com/c6/manual/2k05corvette.pdf

See page 2-27.

On the knock/ping -- when's the last time you ran some fuel system additive through the car?

Thanks EHS..I though I read somewhere shifting at those speeds was OK...started to doubt myself...Cant remember last time, or if I ever have added anything to the fuel system.

No problem.

I had some pinging/knocking myself. C5c4specialist, who maintains my car, threw in a couple of tanks worth of a cleaner like this:

http://www.chevron.com/prodserv/nafl...t/fueladd.shtm

This not only cleans the system and carbon depositis, it also helps the dreaded fuel sensor and gauge going to zero issue.

Another thing, have the dealer program the PCM to the latest GM spec. They get a CD every month. The last reprogram on my car, about six months ago, did wonders for the power and the pinging. You can get a good dealer to do it for free.

Good luck.

I have to disagree with this. I agree that accelerating from 50 in 6th gear is like watching your wife getting her hair done, but I cruise all the time at low rpms in 6th, and never have had any knocking/pinging under acceleration.

I agree with EHS, put some Techron fuel additive in the fuel and see if things clear up. I use it about twice a year or so.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

you either have a spark plug issue, bad gas or carbon build up. You probably need to do a decarbonization process.

Changing the fuel filter helped but the Techron really did the trick for me.
