THANK-YOU for bringing this up. I had the CF link to this subject (not the zip-tie-mod); but the thread was pre-forum software switch and became invalid.
I thought the info was lost for good, but it is now back.

a lot of people may not agree with me on this but intakes are all pretty much as good as the material used for the piping and the filter itself...
if you want to pay up for the brand Name be my guest.. just give me a filter of similar size and plastic piping(dissaptes heat) and ill be happy...
i do a lot of R&D testing on high performace parts for motorcycles so it just amuses me when people spend so much and belive the HP numbers the companies claim...
if you want real power you gotta pay for it... forced induction is the way to go or build the motor bottom up

Just go to Auto Zone or Pep Boys and look thru their conical K/N filters (or the K/N website). I bet you will find a 8-12 inch long conical air filter that will slip over the end of the MAF sensor just perfect. I had this setup for over a year and it worked great. The filter was a used one I had laying around the garage. No use paying big bucks for a Blackwing when a much less expensive version is laying around. The difference in performance will be minimal and not felt for sure.

This all sounds great. However on my 01 C5 I bought the 1040 K&N filter. Since GM used a larger MAS on starting in 01, I had to buy the blackwing conversion tube to make it fit, the opening on the filter was smaller than that on MAS. In my experience, the 1040 fits great for 97,98, 99, and 00, but 01 and up your hosed!
So, is there anyone out there with an 01 and newer who has used the 1040 and not had any fitment issues. This is the greatest thing and at a 1/5th the cost of blackwing.
anyone happen to know the part number for the 9inch filter with same opening as the 1040... ive tried to look it up online and they dont specify really b/c its a universal filter....

I have an 04 ZO6 Z16 and I am running the RF 1040 & it fit perfect!!
