Need to know if this is normal. I have a 98 A4 with 69K miles. Sometime when I'm stopping. I hear a bump and can feel it. It's like the transmission is dropping into low gear. This does not happen everytime. Wondering if this is cause for alarm and is there something going on back there I need to have checked? The gears change find and there is no slipping.
Did you have the rear end worked on recently? Last time I took my '98 to the dealership, the tech didn't use a torque wrench, I'm not even sure he used a wrench...I think he went hand tight! Anyway, I had a similar problem. I torque'd everything in the rear to spec. It was most likely the big nut in the center of the wheel hub, and if it wasn't that, it was probably the subframe-to-frame studs...either way, it went away after I completed the job for the dealership. Good luck!
I've got a 99 that in the last two weeks I've been feeling a wierd rumble/bump in the back of the car, when at idle and stopped it seems to act up a bit more - I'm leaning towards the T/C at this time, it doesn't do it when driving down the road - it seems to kick in when coming to a stop or at a stop in overdrive - I've been troubleshooting this and notice if I drop the trans out of over drive it doesn't do it at a dead stop. So in a nut shell it seems that it has to be in overdrive and at a stop - Like I said before I'm leaning towards T/C but I am also trying to research this torque tube stuff - I've heard something about a spacer or sometype of polyureathane peice in the tube that has caused odd noises and such, but I haven't found anything concrete yet..I'll let you know what I end up figuring out..
Mine has been making a noise--almost like a whine but pretty loud--everytime I make a right turn. I just re-did the clutch and changed the rear-end fluid last week so I hope I didn't mess that up...with what the fluid costed it better be the right stuff Any ideas what this could be??
I recently installed a new LUK Stage1 Z06 clutch in my '99 coupe and two weeks later my rear started to whine. Chevy has my car right now and they informed me that the ring and pinion is bad. This problem has happened to my buddy twice and my brother once. Chevy will not warranty the work if you have mod's done to the drive train. Trust me I know. Found out the hard way....today.
^ I'd reccomend not letting them just replace the ring and pinion, get another unit (4.10's cough cough) and let them slap them in there while its apart!

And the sound goes away when you push the clutch pedal in right? If so, it's normal.
The C5 General Sticky is a good place to start your research. Check out some of the links from the drive shaft weights, and you'll learn much more about the torque tube.

Sounds a little like a wheel bearing problem to me. You can get replacement wheel bearings from Autozone for $125-150....or pay $700 each at the stealership for a bearing similar to the one that's failing.

Sounds like a possibility. The noise dissapeared today, we'll see how long it takes to come back!
