Considering 4.10's Is the HD output shaft money well spent? I checked with a few forum vendors...Does the difference in price reflect a difference in strength or quality? I don't want to get the shaft if I buy an output shaft?
I'm running about 400rwph with my HC package...MN6...
IMO it is an excellent choice to spend the money. Do you go to the track? Do you run DRs or slicks? Do you like to launch hard? If you answer yes to any of these buy the stuff. It makes no difference what type of power you are making. All it takes is one good hook and you can break something. I have both HD shafts, the pinion support, pre load springs, and the brace. Am I 100% bulletproof? Nope. Just consider the purchase added insurance. Most people don't make the investment in the HD stuff until they learn the hard way. Believe me, I did not want to spend the money on a few hunks of metal that I wouldn't see or feel any performance gain from but I did. I decided to build the car ground up and get it ready for the power I will add a later time.
The question is why whouldn't you do it when the gears are out?
I just put in 4.10 gears in my car and the shaft is right there. You just need to take it out and put the new one in. Granted your stock one may never break, but if it does you will have to pull it all apart again.
Mine cost in the $200 range which I just added to the price for doing the gears.
Difference in price reflect difference in strength or quality? Just ask them the materials it's made of. Most commonly vendors are building them with 4340 chromoly or 300m. Beware of vendors that say they are the same because they are *NOT*.
get the dte, believe me its worth it, i am putting down 473 rwhp, with a exedy twin disc clutch (which grabs hard as hell, zero slip), on slicks i dump it at 6000 rpm, and that shaft takes it like a champ
Yes, get the shaft. I had the DTE 410s installed and said "no" to the shaft eventhough 21MC strongly recommended it. The second week my output broke. $400 tow charge plus the labor all over again. I have LPE HD and i think it was around $200-250. Just good peace of mind and insurance.
