Tearing the engine down, intake, heads, headers, alternator, steering pump ect. no big deal, but before I bust my .... I have two dumb questions.
1st: The crank bolt on my ATI balancer - Is that a reverse thread or not?
2nd: I have an auto trans. What's the best way to remove the crank bolt from the ATI balancer?
I told you they were dumb questions!
Thanks,
KJ
All of the engines I have done had bolts that were CCW to remove which is standard. I used a tire iron on the flywheel against the bell housing with the dust cover removed. There is a special tool for holding flywheels that grips the teeth but I never bought one. MAKE sure who ever holds the flywheel doesn't slip and get hurt or damage the flywheel. Apply pressure slowly using a breaker bar until the bolt loosens. Good luck, be careful and don't get hurt. 99 Nassau Blue
2) You can get a flywheel-holding tool from GM or you can do what I did to a buddy's A4 and take the inspection cover off and shove a screwdriver between the flexplate and housing to hold it.
I have a dumb question...why on earth are you doing this to your car if don't have the total specs????
I'de rather wrench on my own engine. I just don't want to destroy a $500 dollar balancer by prying in the wrong direction? Again, just a simple question. I was looking for another opinion other than locking the flywheel, which I already realize as an option. Maybe it's the only option since I have not recieved any other replies.
Thanks for your input though,
Kj
