Default The longest brake job

Well it took about 8 hours over the course of two day but I got it done and the car actually stops when I want it to stop. (never done a brake job before)

I ordered new rotors and ceramic pads from GMpartsdirect.com. I bought a new low profile aluminum jack and red caliper paint from pep boys and set to work on the right front tire. Everything was going fine until I tried to slide the freshly painted and padded caliper back onto the new rotor. Not enough room. Well I messed around with that for awhile until a neighbor stopped by to see what I was doing and offered assistance. He didn't have a clue so we called a friend of his who is a master mechanic. He turned me onto the C clamp trick to push the piston back. Aside from a few nicks in the new red paint I got everything together and finished the first tire in a little under 4 hours. At this point I'm thinkin I should have delivered this stuff and the car to the brake shop. Well I pushed on and finished the other 3 tires. Everything seems to work with no weird noises. Provided a tire doesn't fall off I going to call this a job well done.

Thanks for listening. Had to tell someone. My wife doesn't quite get why I like to tinker with the car.

By the way the Red painted Calipers look great with the new rotors. Also took the opportunity to scrub the rims inside and out. Brake shop doesn't do that.-SL

Congrats on the brake job, and welcome to the Do It Yourself world. Even though it may have taken you longer, you can say you did it. Plus you now know what parts are in actions while your driving the car.

The next time you do the job, you will be able to cut the time by 50%

Congrats on the successful DIY project. I just have 2 words of advice: SHOP MANUALS!!!! They are expensive as manuals go (you can find them from forum vendors for a little over $100 or you can keep an eye on Ebay). Whatever you pay will be the best investment you can make on your car! Get the books before your next project! You won't regret it!
