Default help!

my car missed up. i was driving today and my car started to make a ticking noise. i get home to see what it is and pop the hood and i see that the belts on the car were all ripped up and about to fall off. also it was leaking something that looked like oil but it was cold and smelled like gas. what could have caused this to happen, make the belt shred like it did.

I'm assuming this is the serpentine belt, not the AC belt...

Age, a worn bearing on one of the components the serpentine belt rotates such as the power steering pump, alternator, etc. ... or worse, a problem with your harmonic balancer. Could also be a worn out tensioner for the belt.

I lost a belt on my very first track session in my car after it was prepped for SCCA T1 two years ago. Since then I've replaced it three times, the last just two weeks ago when it started to walk off again.

The leaking fluid could be power steering fluid. The reservoir is in front of the alternator. Also could be coolant. The belt turns the water pump so its possible you overheated. The coolant will come out of the cap on the reservoir in front of the battery when the car overheats.

I suggest you check all belt driven components for lateral play, check the power steering reservoir and coolant reservoir levels, check the harmonic balancer for play, and if you find nothing wrong, get a new belt and put it on. Turn on the car and let it idle and watch the belt for a while. Then if all is good, get someone to watch it while the car is reved up and make sure it is good at high rpm.

Good luck.

My serpentine belt did the same thing after I replace it with a new one. My harmonic balancer was bad.

Best way to check as was told earlier put a new one on and start the car. Look to see if the belt is starting to come off slowly. THat is what I did and caught the problem.

Cheers!!
