I have a 2001 C5 .When the headlites go down, the left one makes a ratcheting noise 4 about 10 seconds. My question is this the headlite module or motor problem. Also how does the module know when the headlite is down.Is it timed or does it sense the changing resistance. Any info will be appreciated.
Well I would say if it's making the grinding/ racheting noise then you've probably got stripped gears in there. I've never heard of position sensing problems with them...
Believe the module senses an increase in current when the motor runs into the stops up or down. http://www.rodneydickman.com/ for brass gears. Takes about an hour to install.

stripped gear.. Very common. You may as well get 2 and replace the other side. I'm sure its not far behind. Its not a hard install, depending on if you have to re-epoxy the housing together or not.
