Seems like a good summary of how to change the plugs/wires. I'm just looking for additional tricks or gotchas from those that have done this before. This will be my first time changing plugs/wires in any car so I want to be prepared when I do this. I think I've got everything ready...TR-55 plugs, GM hotwires, spark plug socket, assortment of extensions, universal joints, dielectric grease, and anti-seize lubricant. Now I just need to get er done Thanks for any additional help.
The snap on tool works, but it is about $50 for it,, and they charge $25 for S&H. I have seen a complete deep swivel socket set for about $80 + shipping.. (danged but I can't remember where).
I also ordered a plug wire puller from snap on that was about $8.00. They sent me one for a VW at $35. I called them on the phone and they almost refused to take it back. Then I had to mail it back (more shipping) and wait 2 months for the refund. I would look elsewhere for tools B4 buying from Snap On. Their tools aren't good enough to pay $25 extra on each item for S&H. And their customer service is
Well I got all the plugs and wires changed this weekend with the help of a friend. Only one bloody knuckle and I was convinced to wear some mechanics gloves. The job actually wasn't that bad. #7 on the drivers side was a little hard but we eventually got it. Getting that plug out wasn't the difficult part, it was trying to get it threaded back in that was challenging since you really can't see what you're doing with that plug. My buddy had a little telescoping mirror that helped to see if we had it lined up right. Also, we had good luck with just plain old extensions and a universal joint. No fancy double jointed sockets or anything.
The old plugs actually looked pretty good. But they weren't the AC-Delcos that most lose the platinum pucks from. They were NGKptr5c-13 which I've searched and discovered were used from the factory in some 99's when there was a shortage of the Delcos due to a strike that year.
Anyway, I'm pretty much a novice with auto maintence but I would say that this is a job that can be done by a beginner if they take their time. Now onto a coolant flush for me.
