Default VATS question

I lost one of my ignition key and need to buy a new one before I lose the other one. How to determine the VATS code before I order one from Eckler’s? If I go to the dealer, will there be a charge just to get the VATS code? Thanks.

The chip on the key is a resistor , if you have a digital multimeter you can read the resistance of the chip . You can tell the vendor your readings and he can match your key blank .

Here are the key # and related resistance:

Key # Ohms
1 = 392
2 = 523
3 = 681
4 = 887
5 = 1130
6 = 1470
7 = 1870
8 = 2370
9 = 3010
10 = 3470
11 = 4750
12 = 6040
13 = 7500
14 = 9530
15 = 11800

So all I have to do is to use an ohms meter to measure? That's easy. Thanks.

You are correct. Match the resistance reading to the key #. No need to go to a dealer. Many locksmiths have the Chev. VAT keys. They will probably charge you around $15 - 20 for the key and for the cutting.

Measured the key last night and it read "889". I think that means code 4. Thanks.

You are correct. The BCM reads the resistance across the key "pellet". If it is with +/-10% of its programmed data, it will start the car for you.
