Default Cam recommendations

Can anyone give suggestions as to what cam I should run? I recently upgraded to longtube headers but am looking for more power. I have a 2000 A4 with 3.15 gears and a stock torque converter. The shop that tunes my car recommended something like 224/224 .581/.581 114 lsa. I dont plan on doing heads at any time. Basically I am just looking for recommendations for cam specs for my setup along with recommended brands of cam packages. I dont know how my stock TC and gears would play into the equation. What kind of gains should I expect? thanks for all the input

2000 M6. Have a Comp Cam 224/228 @ 113* with .535/538 lift. Also 1:8 Jesel rockers giving gross lift of .566/.569. Excellent combo. Nice lope. A .581 lift will probably require grinding clearance in rocker covers as I had to with the .569.

You wont have to grind anything with the 581 lift with stock rockers , Ive installed quitre a few.

The 224 224 581 581 XER on 114 is a great choice

What other intake and exhaust mods do you have right now ??

i had great results with my 224 cam, around 370 rwhp and high 11 second passes with bolt ons and no head work. 3500 stall..., headers, vortex air box...

blackwing, magnaflow catback, and dynatech LT with cats. I recently dynoed at 325rwhp and 334 rwtq. I could expect gains up to 50hp with a cam only setup? Would the stock TC and 3.15 gears limit the gains? Also, what vendor sells a good cam package including retainers, pushrods, seats, seals with these specs?

Since your car is a 2000, you need to upgrade to an LS6 intake. Yes, even with a small 224 cam. Your stock TC with show more power than an upgraded stall since the larger you go, also depending on the str, power will be lost. With that said, your gears will show less net hp over a small gear like a 2:73, but hardly noticable.

If I were you I would go with a larger cam. I cant tell you how many people have come in wanting a cam, and a month later going bigger! I would reccomend an RPM 4 for your setup, because they make great power and they can be tuned to drive like stock, while retaining a nice sound as well.

50 rwhp is very easy to accomplish, after your intake and exhaust work is done. It sounds like you have a fairly decent exhaust setup, so now all that is lacking is a manifold. Perhaps a Ported throttle body, but thats mainly for track reasons and idle quality.

The RPM 4 is a 232/236 595/601 on a 114+4. I realize this sounds like a big cam, but I have seen this cam in numerous automatic vettes with great results and awesome drivability.

PM me if you need more info.

Drop an ASP and Meizere EWP on there for insurance but LS6 intake, cam, longtubes you should see 380 - 390 RWHP even through your auto. . . .

Your baseline does seem a bit low btw

I think it sounds about par with no LS6 intake, through cats and an auto... Definetly decent for the setup he has IMO.

Will you need to increase the idle because of the cam? If so wouldn't a TC be a good suggestion to go with the cam?

The car may feel sluggish in the lower RPMs with the stock converter. I'd go with at least a Yank SS3200 and 3.42's. Between the cam, rear, and converter, it'll feel like you added 100hp.

A stall is a good idea before a cam, but it will work without it. Drivability/Idle quality is all in the tune. Especially with autos, tuning is nessecary (IMO) even in stock form. Stock torque management/timing tables are junk and a lot of power is left on the table even stock!

I would add a small converter (PI or Yank), Cam, and see how your stock gears work out. You can always change them later down the road. Your stall will help you get out of the hole, as will gears, but I think a good stall is much more important than gears in your situation.

Also, I cannot stress enough the importance of a good tune. Your gas mileage, tranny life, idle quality, and drivability depend on it!

who has the best price on an ls6 intake manifold package these days? Last time I checked was back in december when Fred Beans was having a sale at dealer cost. It was around $330 if I remember correctly.

Also, has anyone out there who went with a moderate cam only setup replaced the valve springs only? Any problems or issues with that? I dont plan on doing any racing so if I can save some cash by not having to replace pushrods, retainers, seats, seals, gaskets, etc. I would be in favor of it. thanks

Weak link in the LS1 is the push rods, don't skimp here or you will be needing a engine rebuild
