I thinking of upgrading the heads on my 98 vert. I have the perimeter bolt heads on it now but understand that the center bolt heads and LS6 heads flow better. I'm looking to buy ported heads whichever head I go with. If I change from the perimeter bolt heads I need to chand valve covers and coil brackets. Has anyone else done this and how much do the covers and brackets cost. Also is it worth upgrading to the LS6 heads. I'm going to end up with an LS6 intake and probably a 224/228/114 cam.
I also have a 98 that had the perimeter bolt heads. I swapped them for ported 99 LS1 heads that have the center bolt. I picked up a set of used center bolt valve covers on the C5 parts forum for $40.00. I bought the coil brackets new but I can remember the price I paid for them.
If you can swing it ported LS6 heads are a VERY worth while upgrade over LS1 heads. They flow better and will give you a higher CR without milling them. If you can't swing the LS6 heads I would go with ported 5.3 truck heads over ported 5.7 LS1 heads. You should also keep in mind that if the cost of the ported LS6 or the 5.3 heads + core charge approach 2K you can also opt for a nice set of AFR 205 heads for a few dollars more. If you buy AFRs there is no core charge to worry about.
