Now, now, let's be kind and just let him know that the Valentine One is the best - unless you prefer the other one

I have the valentine 1 as well. Good quality, the directional arrows are neat, the upgradeable feature is nice. All around good buy, but it costs $400. A comparable alternative is the passport 8500, which is about 350 bucks.

I have a V-one, love it! Great range, I know what's out there just by listening to the different tones. Nice to know if they are coming from the rear or side as well.

It is a little big though!

My wonderful wife caught me completely unawares on my birthday recently and presented me with a Valentine 1. It's awesome and everything about it, from the nice packaging to the great documentation to the high manufacturing quality, impressed me. I thought it'd be lower calibre due to Valentine's small, independent reputation. It's worked well in my short experience with it so far.

To add a bit of value to this thread rather than just an endorsement, I'll share a quick install note. I decided to try and fab my own cable to hook to the auto-dim mirror myself before shelling out some bucks to buy one off the net.

I found a black phone cord, measured and cut it to the length I wanted and crimped on some pins I extracted from a discarded PCB connector I had. From there it was just a matter of unplugging the mirror connector, shoving the pins into the appropriate locations on the back of the connector and plugging it into the mirror anf the phone jack into the V1.

The instructions elsewhere said to use the orange and brown wires but these both looked identical. Anyway, it worked.

I cut the cord as short as I could so there was no dangle or excess.

You can see it's a straight shot to the mirror. I can always make another, longer cord if I decide to move the V1.

The best kind of install - a 5 minute one.

I have 8500 New Blue display. While it does not give directional ability it does provide super range and easy to use.

Is the K40 the system that is over $1000 and requires professional installation. I have heard of it, but havent really heard any reviews. If this is the one you have, could you tell us a little about it? thanks

My wife and I both have the Bell vector 900 series Detectors. They're also upgradeable and cost about $300.00.

I did an internet search and found a site by a former cop rating all the units. Sorry I do not have the internet address. He did say that #1 was Beltronics #2 Passport and #3 Valentine. I bought the Beltronics on ebay from a guy who had 40 of them for 240 including shipping.

K40 here and yes it's not a real friendly kind of DIY install.
Front and rear radar with laser diffusers here.
If you look at my homepage you can see my leds under the radio and the 2 front diffusers in the front screens.

That site is www.radarbusters.com I've been driving around for about 10 days with the top three rated detectors on my dash ( borrowed from friends in our club) and the escort 8500x50 picks up signals slightly quicker with a little less false hits. It does not however, have the audio alarm. It's really a toss up with price an issue. The are currently listed on e-bay --radar detector-- but now from $249.00 to $329.00

Are you sure you have the volume turned up on your x50? The reason I ask is mine screams at me like a banshee when it picks up radar. If yours isn't it is either broken or the volume is turned down.
