The purpose of the h pipe or x pipe is to eqaulize the two separate exhaust pipes. I was running a true chambered dual exhaust on my C-3, and there was quite a bit of resonance and popping when I let off the gas. I had a h pipe put in and the resonance and popping went away. I did change the sound a little as well. It went from being a raw, brapp sound, to a nice muscle car performance sound.
I replaced the stock hpipe with an x pipe on my C5 when I put the cat back system on. I think most will agree that it cust down the popping considerably.
