I have a 2001 vert A4 with a little over 40K miles. I bought it last July with 37,500 miles on it. It was a GM certified used car and the dealer changed the oil before I took delivery. I have a 3 year 36K GMPP warantee. I'm disappointed that after about 2500 miles it's down a quart of oil. To me this is excessive. I've read a lot of posts about the 01s and oil consumption and that GM considers 1 quart per 2000 miles acceptable. However, i've never owned a car, including a C4 that burned oil and would like this car to get the re-ring upgrade. My question is how should I approach the dealer? What documents i.e. Tech Service bullitens etc... should I bring with me. Also, I live in Northern NJ and the dealer I bought does not sell a lot of corvettes. Can anyone recommend a large corvette volume dealer in my area who has dealt with this. Thanks
That actually sounds like pretty normal oil usage to me. People with the problem are using 1QT every 1000 miles like mine. I would be happy to get your usage.

I agree. In the old days, 1,000 per quart was the "norm" for being acceptable. I know this isn't the old days, and I got a '00 'vert C5 that is right about the same as this fella has. It has about 50,000 miles now and I bought it at 24,000 miles. No change running Mobil1.
I live in NJ and just went through the oil consumption problem. My car though was buring 1.2 quarts for every 800 miles under hard acceleration with a MN6. A4s tend to burn less oil just because of driving habits between the 2 cars (as well it really effected only early year production models - mine was made in March). I had my work done at Defelice Chevy in Pt. Pleasant which is far for you, but the head Tech there really knows his stuff.
If yours is burning 1 qt for every 2500 miles unfortunately I doubt that GM will find that excessive. What GM will require is 3 tests to see how much oil is being used. Basically they fill it up, you drive x amount of miles and they measure the level and then repeat the process.
Knowing that information you could bypass the system and make it look like your car is really burning more oil, but that seems like a lot of work and after seeing what they have to do to fix the problem (take your engine apart) I would suggest just living with adding a some oil in between oil changes.
I guess that I'm lucky!! I've never abused an engine so hard as I do this LS1, and it burns less oil than ANY vehicle I've ever owned. I might use 1 qt in 10,000 miles-'99 a4 vert vette.

Actually it is not luck. In 01 GM tried a different ring that they thought would work and I believe would produce more HP. GM probably did not take into consideration that the general public A) does not like to see oil blowing out the back of the $50K car and B) is too lazy to check their oil levels between oil changes thus running around with not enough oil.
For me I did not like the big smoke clouds out the back of my car. I also did not like the fact that over 3K miles I am adding 3 quarts of oil which was starting to add up. Oil changes were costing me the 6.5 quarts of oil plus an additiopnal 3.0 quarts which just became excessive even for a weekend car and of course I had to carry oil with me on days I knew I was driving hard. Really just a PITA....
