I know I read all the info already, and it is a big help! I took my 98 manual trans to the local dealer for recall service. This was done last week, and it still is locking up! What to do now??? I assume they just tried the reprogram thing. I am assuming they now need to replace the ECL? Or should I just buy the CLB and foget GM? If GM f'd up shouldn't they "really" fixt it right? I am pretty good at getting it unlocked now, I am a veteran!
Help!!

I installed the CLB six years ago on my '99 coupe and never looked back. It disables the actuator that locks the steering column, so it is impossible for the column to lock up on you ever again. Problem solved!

67tripwr - I'd get the CLB and be done with it.
babalu95 - the CLB is a small device that plugs into the column lock connector under the driver's side dash and disables the column lock. Cost is about $60 and is not difficult to install. Takes maybe 30 minutes if you take your time. I got mine from Thunder Racing - they're a forum vendor that you can contact by clicking on their site on the left side of the page. Scroll down to the tuner section and look for their name. Good luck.

I had a problem with my 2001 Z06 locking up. I took it to G.M. for their repair and shortly after sold the car without any further problem. My 2002 Z06 has not had a problem yet but has only 860 miles on it. I have had the recall procedure done on it already. It may be that the most expedient remedy is the aftermarket CLB, however, doing it this way really lets G.M. off the hook for something they should be more aggresively addressing. I am going to do nothing until I have a problem and then I am going to get real sh-tty with G.M. If more Corvette owners took this path than maybe the problem would be factory solved in the correct manner. I am, frankly, appalled that this has been allowed to go on for so long. -Bob
Why should I have to spend a dime to fix this, when GM knows it is defective??? I am taking it back to the dealer after lunch. They said this time they will disable the relay. I hope this works! They said they had 4 in yesterday for the same sh*t! I just spoke to my friend, who has been in the Vette parts business for over 20 years. Here is what he had to say: If GM disables the relay, then the column will not lock anymore. This is a sure fire way to make stealing the car easier! GM makes an improved/stronger silenoid assembly which is 178.00. I think GM should install the updated unit for free! My other friend has a girl he works with who just had her Vette stolen at her house!

First everything you say is correct - GM SHOULD fix this the right way, but I know they will not.
If you are not covering up your vin number, thieves can just jot your vin down and go get a key made for your car and drive it away lock or no lock.
Maybe you should look at car alarms?
If you do not want to get the CLB, you better have a cell phone and AAA because you will eventually need it.
exactly..anyone who reads all the info here and still believes that GM will fix it so it won't fail is fooling themselves.....
for anyone who does not know...you can sign a waiver to have the open campaign closed on your vehicle...meaning they will not do the PCM flash and you can do the CLB and not worry anymore
