It drive but the transmission stays where the gear is shifted. Put it in D and it will stay there; same when place in 3,2,1 or R. This is my friends 1997 Vette A4 Coupe with over 65k miles. Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated. Thanks!
Bert
Not sure I understand the problem. You mean you cannot physically move the gear shift lever out of whatever gear you put it in? Or, the transmission itself stays in that particular gear?
Check the fluid - yes you have to get under the back of the car. No dip stick!
Normal A4 operation:
1 - car stays in first - can bang it right up agains the rev limiter will not shift.
2 - starts in 2 and again it will not shift.
3 - starts in first, shifts to second depending on trottle position and RPM, same for 2-3 shift. Will not go into overdrive and Torque convertor won't lock up under normal operation.
D - shifts from 1-2 and 2-3 and 3 to Overdrive and torque convertor will lock up when not accerlerating.
So, want is your buddy's doing or not doing right?

Yes, the transmission itself stays in that particular gear. For example if you place it in D, it will stay there and won't shift.
