Absolutely rediculous!
Even if you got a new waterpump, you would still need the same shape gasket to seal it, unless he is going to sell you a new engine block too, heh...

If you have a 98 or earlier, maybe even 99 (can't remember) they came with paper/felt gaskets which I think GM no longer makes. They now come with metal/rubber gaskets which work much better. Tell them to look up the gasket for a 02 model, they will work. You will need 2 of them and they are the same part#, around $4 each.

Or better yet, take it somewhere else!

Actually, I don't even see why they would have to pull the waterpump to replace the compressor. Somebody check me on that.

My 98 has new compressor, and no water pump was removed! That is for sure

GM makes the gaskets and they are reusable just like most of the C5 gaskets.

Thanks guys, heres an update...I finally found the part an hour away and i was about halfway there when the shop called me again and said the waterpump was internally leaking, therefore the bearings are shot and it needs to be replaced anyways! I"ve never heard of having to pull the waterpump either to replace the ac compressor

I bought a set of the metal gaskets from Texas Speed and a set of the paper from the dealer.

Find a new mechanic.

I also thought GM did not make the paper gaskets for 97-98's but they do. I just helped a friend with a cam swap in a 98 and he was sold the black gaskets.
