Default 99 C5 FOB programming problem

Hi All,

I bought a new FOB off ebay. I'm having trouble getting the programming to take.

I followed this procedure:

1. Turn the ingnition key to the ON position
2. Clear any warning messages on the Driver Information Center (DIC) by pressing the RESET button.
3. Press the OPTIONS button on the DIC several times until the blank page is displayed, then press and hold the RESET button for two seconds.
4. When the message FOB TRAINING is displayed, push the RESET button once. The message HOLD LK+UNLK 1ST FOB will be displayed.

5. Press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the transmitter simultaneously for 15 seconds.

6. When a transmitter is learned, the DIC will display FOB LEARNED and then prompt you to learn the next transmitter.

7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for each additional transmitter.

8. Remove the key from the ignition.

But once I removed the key...the FOB don't work? I was prompted by the console that "1st FOB learned." .....but I disagree.

I tried to just re-sync the remote and car by holding down lk/unlk but I don't get the horn beep? held it in for a good 30 seconds...nothing. Tried 3 times (I know sometimes if you don't hit them at the same time, it won't work).

Any ideas? Also, anyone know what part of the car is reponsible for responding back to the FOB....I'll take a wild stab and say the BCM? cause I think my BCM hates me. I've had mysterious BCM related issues lately.

cadams,
First make sure you have the right remote for your 99.
The part # is 10253839. It should have a passive switch at the bottom.
Next make sure the battery in the remote is good.
The receiver is located on the driver's side above the rear wheelwell.
If your TPS's are reading properly chances are the receiver is ok since they both work on the same frequency.

part #s match.

got a new battery on my way home. Tried it all over again.

Once I programmed it, it worked ok; car would lock and unlock.

But then I walked back inside and heard the car horn chirping at me. I checked the fob and the passive setting is turned to off. After about 3 random horn chirps, the remote no longer works.

Another thing I noticed is that the new fob rattles. I thought it was no big deal because my old fob rattles too. but then again..the old one don't work either.

any other suggestions out there?

New fobs don't rattle. Unfortunately you may have bought someone else's bad fob. Its buyer beware on E-bay!

yeah.. mine rattles too, and likewise, it doesn't work either. I' dunno I get by just using the key guys. I find the remote to be excess luxury really.

yeah, i took it apart and the part that rattles looks like a small capacitor...although I know it is definately NOT a cap. whatever it is, I think its the part responsible for remembering the rolling frequency and staying in lock-step with the car.

time to send some emails and, if necessary, bad feedback.

wish me luck.

The rattle is normal. That's the passive mechanism you're hearing.
Was the remote you bought off Ebay brand new or used?
If used then RCK1999 is right.
Buy a new one and that usually will solve your problem.

Recently I had a very difficult to cure passive system failure. The dealer thought parts at it (IMHO the problem will not be the antennia). As above make sure your car battery is within specs.

You symptons sound a problems I had. To fix the problem, the Key fob and the BCM were replaced.

Even now every week or so the fob will lose it memory and not be reconginized. I hold the fobs two buttons till horn honks and passive works again for quite some time, until another botton holding experience.

There is also some advise to clean all the grounds in the vehicle that can be found in a search.

I have a similar problem. The battery on my fob was getting weak (almost had get within spitting distance of the driver's side) so I decided to change the battery in both fobs. After the battery change 1 fob took the programming the other didn't. I would hold the buttons for over a minute and nothing... The fob that did take the reprogram has a tendency to chirp the alarm at varying times. I've resynched the goofy thing, re-learned it, used it with passive on and off. No luck.

BTW, both worked perfect before the battery change.
