How do you clean out the old fluid completely out of our power steering system? What is the procedure id doing it yourself?

I haven't done it on my C5 yet, but basically the way you do it is to disconnect the return line from the tank, connect a hose to the return line to run into a bucket, then use the starter to turn over the pump while you pour fresh fluid into it. You also need to cycle the steering from lock to lock to get the fluid out of the rack. So, you need someone to turn the steering wheel and the starter, someone to pour fluid into the reservoir (it empties fast!), and someone to hold the line into the bucket (unless you secure it somehow).

And, if you feel really good, you can let the engine start. Now the fluid moves REALLY FAST, but you don't have to worry about the starter overheating.

Now, here's a cheating way. Suck all the fluid out of the reservoir, fill it with fresh, start the engine and cycle the steering back and forth for about 30 seconds. Stop the engine, and repeat until you're happy with the color of the fluid. Takes more fluid this way, and theoretically not as good a procedure, but considerably less yelling.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

This is the way I've been doing it for years! Go to a boating supply store and buy a suction oil change container that will hold 4-5 quarts of liquid. This will do the job, and you'll find many other automotive uses for this tool as well.
