I finally decided to buy a set of aftermarket wheels for my 97 coupe (C6 style chrome, I can't wait ). I also ordered a set of Kuhmo ASX tires, and a set of new tire pressure sensors (these sure are expensive!). I thought I read that the tire pressure sensors get strapped onto the wheels, but this is what I rec'd.
They came with nuts and rubber washers. It looks like these mount at the valve stem. Does anyone know if this is the correct part for my car? Do I need to give the tire store any special instructions?
In an OEM wheel there are cutouts that the main body fits into, right behind where the valve stem goes. The sensor mounts (o ring goes inside) from the inside with the nut on the outside securing it in place. Look at this write up.
If the aftermarket wheels you got do not have a recess for the sensors, then it's cobble time. The most common way to mount them on aftermarket wheels that do not have recesses is to remove the valve stem from the sensors, and affix them to the inner center rim of the inside of the wheel, using something to really secure them in place, so they do not come ;loose and self destruct in there.
Hopefully your new wheels have a recess....

Congrats on your new wheels and tires. It's a good move to buy new TPS for a 97'. The TPS on your photo is the correct one for you car. If they are brand new, they will come with a new o- ring and nut. Just screw it into place and torque the nuts to 35lbs. inch. Be careful not to over tighten because you can twist the valve stems off. It's a very simple process. You will need to retrain your TPS to your car. Good luck.

Congrats on your new wheels and tires. You should be able to check with the vendor and see if the wheels are set up to accept the sensors without any clamps - I'd bet they are.
My new wheels had to have the sensors epoxied on.Well,2 did not hold and I had to pay a tire shop to break them down at my own expense to redo.I JB Welded them on this time and went to Lowes, bought 30' zip ties in the electrical section and strapped them in also.Shouldn't come loose this time. Also, save yourself some aggrevation and reprogram the sensors before you mount them in the rims.Just make sure you mark the sensors so you know what which one goes where.LT/FRT,RT/FRT etc...It is much easier than trying to get the magnet to read them when they are glued inside the center of the wheel somewhere, especially when the people that originally mounted the tires didn't mark the location!

"torque the nuts to 35lbs. inch." Somewhat confusing. To clarify, PLEASE do not torque the TPM sensor nuts to 35 ft. lbs.!!!! You.ll be buying either new nuts or new sensors. Specs for torquing the sensor nuts are 106 IN. LBS = about 9 FT LBS (not very tight)!
The forum vendor I bought the wheels from said that the TPS's should bolt right up to the new wheels without needing any straps. I'll have to put them together first and then determine if I think they will stay put without straps. Everything has arrived, so I need to find a tire place that can do the job right. That might be the hardest challenge. I sure don't want brand new wheels (or tires) messed up from the mounting process!!! Pictures to follow...
I was trying to get the tires, wheels, and TPS ready tonight so I can take the car to the shop tomorrow to get the tires mounted. Now it's 9:30pm and I think I screwed up!!!
I put all the tire pressure sensors in the wheels by putting the valve stem through the hole. Then I placed the rubber washer on, then the nuts. I tightened all of them, but when I took a closer look, the rubber washers were all bunched up!!! I think I was supposed to put the washer on the valve stem before I put it through the hole so it would be on the inside of the wheel. Can anyone confirm the proper way to use these rubber washers???? I was really looking forward to having the wheels on the car tomorrow, but now it looks like I'll need to order new washers because at least 2 of them are unusable now.

The o-rings (1 on each) go on the stem before you put it through the hole. The nut then gets screwed on. HTH

Go to Home Depot, Lowes or any good hardware or parts store and get some #9 o-rings. They will work fine. No need to pay the "dealer premium". They'll cost you less than a buck.
