Default Removing Hurst shifter Stops?

Hello,
Someone told me that it was ok to remove the shifter limiter/stops (in front and back of the shifter) and that the limiters were actually built into the Transmission. I can't back that up with my factory manuals so what do you guys think? I am trying to get my shifter to stop rattling and buzzing. I've tried weights in the ****, teflon tape, more teflon tape and an aftermarket ****. Still rattles. So: am I going to ruin my transmission if I remove the shifter stops? I've got it all apart right now, so if you have any input please reply!!! Thanks in advance!

I didn't remove them however I backed them out until they were flush on the inside and used loctite. I also used teflon tape for the ****, short piece of 3/4 hose on the shifter and did the 1 1/2 inch pipe plug mod. I have no noise from the hurst.

I removed the stops and still get some rattle during heavy acceleration and in 4th gear. I also have the PVC end cap installed and while that helped to diminish some transmission noise, it didn't do much for the rattle.

Ok. So removing the stops won't necessarily solve the rattling. Does anyone else know for sure if this is safe to remove the stops? I figure it will be ok because the factory shifter doesn't have any kind of stop built into it...

Get yourself an MGW pistol grip ****. It's a heavy billet **** with a rubber grip. This will absorb the rattle, it did for me.

Yes the trans has internal stops but consider this, hard shifting can cause damage to it. The reason the Hurst has stops is because they assume the user will be shifting hard. They also know our trans has internal stops but realize hard shifts will damage the internal stops. With normal driving it isn't a problem and the reason GM didn't include stops with the OEM shifter.

I didn't install the stops on my Hurst when I first installed it but, after doing more research later I put them in. Afterall I did buy the Hurst for some heavy handed banging.

The stops are optional and can be used for hard shifting during racing. Other than that, there is no harm done if you remove them. I've had mine out for 3 years. If you leave them in, make sure they're Loctited in so they don't work their way in and leave you unable to shift into some of the gears.

That **** did not work for me, in fact the rattle was worse than it is with my Hurst billiard ball ****.

Wow, that's a first. I've never heard of the **** not working to reduce or remove the Hurst rattle.

The Hurst "Rattle", are driveline harmonics that are amplified out the shifter ****. Basically the **** acts like a speaker for the harmonics. I'm very surprised the MGW **** didn't work for you. This heavy billet **** with sound absorbing rubber should have taken care of it.

Some have also added electrical tape around the **** threads to help absorb the noise. Others have installed a rubber tube around the shifter shaft.

Hurst put the stops on the shifter so we don't damage the stops on the tranny. They are simple to set just remember to use loc-tite! I haven't had anything like a rattle or weird noise at all ?

This is true and remember the Hurst shifter is a performance part, they figure you will be very aggressive with the shifter for racing. This type of shifing would damage the transmissions internal stops. They are fine for normal driving but not for the abuse of racing.

Interesting to hear that you have no noises from your shifter... And frustrating I might add as well. What year Corvette do you have and how many miles? I just want to compare because if you have the same age corvette as mine I can suspect that something is definately needing repair versus if your car is a 2004 C5.... Well then your car is just new and clearly will run a tad quieter. Thanks man

Check out my post and my final fix for the transmission chatter. Oh, and I have a new car so that is not what is wrong with your car. Oh, and I have removed the bump stops too.

Hope it helps.

Hi,
I installed a Hurst and got the same buzzing sound. I came back to the forum and read EVERY post I could find on this problem. Even the one where someone wrote to Hurst and quoted their response, haha -Basically HURST had no fix and wasn't going to worry about it because its a racing shifter. A little buzzing is one of the least concerns a race car driver should have - haha.

After reading all posts I started working on what would work for me.

Pulling out the shift stops did nothing. The vibration seemed to be in left right direction rather than forward backward so the shift-stops had no effect.

Let me be clear about my configuration.
Hurst shifter
MOMO shift ****.

1st attempt: Cut one tennis ball in 1/2. Pushed all the way down over shaft to bottom. Results: Slight dampening of sound.

2nd attempt: Removed MOMO and tennisball half (ie. ran with NO ****, shifted with Mechanix Glove on). Results: NO NOISE! Obviously the **** played a role in the noise.

3nd attempt: MOMO added back. Added other half of tennis ball on top of first 1/2. Results: Maybe a bit more dampening.

4th attempt: Removed 1 1/2-tennis ball piece, added a 2" rubber endpipe (see pic below) slid down just above tennisball half. Results: Much better but still just a bit of sound. (I'm a perfectionist).

5th attempt: Removed MOMO and installed stock ****. Also bought three strips of sticky 1/4 oz. wheel weights from Napa. I surrounded as much of the exposed shaft with these weights (two layers, total of 16 weights) as I could then tie-wrapped them for extra security that they'd stay in place. Results: NO NOISE!!!!

Now I'm a happy camper.

I'm thinking if I remove the tennisball half and the PVC (rubber) endpipe I'll still not hear the noise but I don't want to take everything apart just to try that.

..rickko..
PS. Now I've got the MOMO for sale cheap (its BRAND NEW) in the For Sale section. It just didn't cut it for me.

Good luck!

You know what Rick.... The old timers in my shop have mentioned the adding of stickyweights to things to dampen out vibrations and sounds and I've witnessed that it works so I'm gonna go grab some stickyweights and throw em on my shift lever... I'll get back to you!

You can see in my picture I've also got the 2" rubber endcap and underneath, you can BARELY see, is a 1/2 of a tennis ball shoved down as far as I could.

Take the **** off all together and drive around. You'll see the ultimate culprit is the ****. You might have to choose one that threads on like the stock ****.

You can remove them. Some shifters that originally had them have dumped them. They are only secondarily beneficial if you are going to bang-shift your car.

All the best.
