HELP, service column lock issues
Okay, had to take a trip to illinois over the weekend and got about half way there and the dic shows service column lock, the column never did lock even when the car was turned off. Car ran like normal the whole trip.
Anybody tell me whats going on? What i need to do?
Appreciate any info you can offer. Thanks guys.

I drove mine for about a year that way and enjoyed the fact the column never locked (other than having to reset the message at startup).
What likely happened, is when you started it, the column physically unlocked, but for whatever reason, the unlocked feedback signal wasn't received by the BCM. Thus, the BCM became "confused", threw the "sevrice column lock" message, and as long as it remains in this state, no longer attempts to actuate the lock mechanism.
To fix it, go in the fusebox under the passenger floor, pull fuse #25, wait a minute, and reinsert it. That will reset the BCM and all should be back to normal...the message shoud go away, and your column should physically lock again when you remove the key from the ignition switch.
If that works for you, I would strongly suggest investing in a Column Lock Bypass (CLB) to prevent any future problems....next time you might not be so lucky and have it stick in the locked position....then you're stranded.
Although you had the recall service performed, realize the M6 recall procedure does absolutely NOTHING to actually address the lock mechanism. It's intent is to only prevent operation of the car if the lock is physically locked.
The advice given was right on the money. You might want to order your CLB now and not reset your BCM until you receive and install your new CLB. Best of luck to you.
Cheers
John
