If so is it worth it?

Very good article.

My only question is.. Can the 60-E be built stronger then the 65-E is?

of course, what do you want to spend, that should be your question...

The 65-E is 2300 dollars. If the 60-E can be built stronger for less. It's not worth it

The above posters are right.

The 4L65E is in most senses a 4L60E, there are two 5 gear planetaries from the factory in it and there is an "improved" drum in it, a few other things.

The parts can all be purchased from GM. The 5 pinion planetaries are and absolute must for anyone rebuilding a 4L60E, they are about $300 for the two of them. There are plenty of hard parts available for a 60. If you just want something to swap in, the 65 is stronger, but if have a broken 60, don't bother buying a 65, all of the parts are available and better.

A little off topic, but I hope some people looking at this may know answer. Will the five speed transmission that is on the Cadillac work with a LS1?

5Spd Auto should be available with the C5. It would be so much better.

Hydra-Matic 5L50-E (M22 - RWD, MV3 - AWD) Five-Speed Automatic Transmission

2005 Model Year Summary

• New application in Cadillac STS (M22 and MV3)

FULL DESCRIPTIONS OF NEW OR CHANGED FEATURES

NEW APPLICATION IN CADILLAC STS (M22 and MV3)
The STS luxury sedan uses an identical rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive powertrain to the SRX sport utility. Like the SRX, the STS continues to use Performance Algorithm Liftfoot (PAL), which detects when the STS is being driven in a spirited fashion and remains in its current gear ratio even when the driver lifts a foot off the accelerator pedal. The STS also uses the Driver Shift Control feature, which allows the driver to shift the transmission like a clutchless manual gearbox. Electronic safeguards prevent over-revving should the wrong gear position be selected.

LOW MAINTENANCE
The unique assembly procedure aids the long-term durability of the Hydra-Matic 5L50-E. No scheduled maintenance is required and there is an elimination of any potential contaminants entering the transmission since it is assembled in a “clean room,” the first of its kind for transmission assembly. In addition, the components are not inserted into the case, which is conventional assembly practice; instead, the case is slid over the assembled components with visual sensors monitoring parts alignments and component quality. The Hydra-Matic 5L50-E uses DEXRON III fluid and is filled for life, requiring no scheduled maintenance. The transmissions are filled at the Strasbourg factory, eliminating the possibility of contamination at the vehicle assembly plants.

OVERVIEW
The Cadillac STS equipped with the Northstar V-8 engine uses the 5L50-E direct coupled to the all-wheel-drive unit or a flange on the rear of the 5L50-E for rear-wheel-drive configuration, although the interior components remain identical to the Cadillac XLR or SRX applications.
The Hydra-Matic 5L50-E was introduced in 2003. It is a fully electronic five-speed automatic transmission that is a modification of the 5L40-E transmission used in the Cadillac CTS and the SRX with the 3.6L V-6 VVT. Like the 5L40-E, the transmission in the Cadillac XLR, STS and SRX is built in Strasbourg, France by GM Powertrain, a plant renowned for the high quality of its transmission products.
Like the 5L40-E, the 5L50-E is a tough, versatile transmission that works in both car and light-truck applications, with both rear- and four-wheel drive applications.
This 5L50-E transmission has a dual-plate torque converter which allows increased torque handling capacity. The 5L50-E will handle 25 percent more torque than the 5L40-E. Further enhancements of the 5L50-E include coast clutches for each gearset that allow engine braking rather than freewheeling when the driver lifts a foot off the accelerator pedal.
Calibrations of the 5L50-E allow Driver Shift Control (DSC), Performance Algorithm Shifting (PAS) and Electronically Controlled Engine Braking to be integrated together in the XLR and SRX, which is a unique feature of the 5L50-E. DSC allows the driver to manually override the automatic gear selection. PAS lets the electronic transmission controller override the automatic gear selection during closed throttle high lateral acceleration maneuvers, rapidly downshifting with nearly synchronous engine speed matching for quick power up when the throttle is reopened. The PAL feature was formerly called Electronically Controlled Engine Braking and retains the current gear when the throttle is closed, giving the feeling of a manual transmission during deceleration.
Additional features include Downgrade Detection with Brake Assist, which automatically downshifts the transmission while braking on a downgrade, which assists braking, and PAL, which prevents upshifts during sporting cornering maneuvers. Sensors will also initiate up to two downshifts, depending upon vehicle speed changes. Further, the system will shift the transmission to maintain speed on hills while cruise control is engaged, although the transmission will recognize when the car is going uphill and minimize the amount of cycling between gears that normally occurs during grade changes.
The case of the 5L50-E in the XLR application is mounted in the rear of the vehicle, giving the XLR a 50/50 weight distribution for improved balance and superior vehicle dynamics. A small bell housing couples the 5L50-E to a driveshaft that leads to the engine.
