A few nights ago I did a hard launch from a stop - just like 100 times before. This time, though, something seemed to slip. I thought it might just be the tires, but then came the stink and I assumed it was probably the clutch.
Since that time, I cannot get the clutch to slip by romping on the throttle, yet I am still smelling a burning smell. Then I received a "Service Traction Control System" from the DIC <No, I havn't pulled the codes from it yet - I will do so tonight>
I have 45K miles on the original clutch - other than a few track days and the occasional burnout, I am pretty easy on the clutch.
Do you think it's the clutch? Or can something else in the traction control system burn?
There is a pretty good way to tell if a clutch is going out.
Stomping it in first gear will not do it.
Go find yourself a nice piece of interstate or road with a pretty steep hill, put the car is a high gear, 5th or 6th and when you get to the hill stand on it. It will put a high load on the car at low RPM, if the clutch is band, it will slip then.
I had a C4 that I fried the clutch at the track on, drove it home from NC back to TN.. just have to downshift on the hills as it would start slipping when I was climing hills in 5th.
im not sure 100 hard lauches and days at the track, is easy on the clutch, but I agree with the 5-6 gear going up the hill theory.
Im hopping my clutch goes sooner than later to I can get a new set of heads and clutch

I should clarify... A "hard launch" for me does not involve slipping the clutch.. And the track days were on a road coarse (not dragstrip); hard on the tires and brakes for sure, but not too hard on the clutch.
Thanks all for the input. Still haven't pulled the codes (moved this weekend!)
