Took all wheels off today to paint calipers...noticed 2 nails in my left rear ...both nails are close to center of the tread....will it be alright to remove the nails and put plugs in or should these tires be pached.

Take it in to get patched right. I like doing things old school, but plugs just dont belong on a high performance auto.
I plugged one once on the Kansas turnpike about 3 in the morning in below freezing temperatures. I ran the tire till the threads were showing through 10,000 miles later. I never even thought about it again. I don't know about the safety factor, especially at high speeds, but, the plug obviously held.
The first one I had done was a patch on the inside but the tires only had about 10K on them. The next time (same tire)....I thought I'd be replacing them soon so we plugged. I'd guess I've put about 20K on that tire since and never had an issue. Patching is the Ideal fix...but a plug will do in a pinch.

Exact same thing happened to me a few weeks ago!!! Two patches and a balance at Tire Kingdom for $29.14.
I always take the time to pull the tire off and patch it from the inside. Most places now are using a combination patch/plug that is one piece so that it has the advantages of the patch, plus it seals the cord area to prevent water from getting in between the layers and degrading the tire.
Also, a lot of places, like Discount Tire, will only patch a high performance tire 2 times. After that, you have to replace the tire.

This is true. There is a special patch/plug that is supposed to be used. Also, as you mentioned, they will patch twice. After that, the tire loses it's speed rating. Same thing with using a plug, instead of a patch. You do not retain the speed rating of the tire. Using a plug, the tire may run fine for a long time, and maybe, forever. It may also deflate at high speed...not my choice, I want to be able to trust the tire. I don't drive my C5 like I drive my Explorer. Tire stresses end up being quite a bit higher on the C5, it's why I don't mess around with tires.
