I recently read an article in a corvette magazine that was written by a former car thief. So I was wondering, what is the best car security system to install? He said the "Club" is a joke as he could hack saw the steering wheel in half in less than 20 seconds to remove it. (I'm glad I already wasted my money on that last year). He basically stated he would only come up short with something that wouldn't allow the car to start so he was unable to drive it away. Factory alarms, honking horns, kill switches etc. were all beatable.....so what would you suggest ?? He also stated the "Lo-Jack" would only lead police to an already stripped down vehicle because when he stole it in the middle of the night, by the time you noticed it gone it would be dismantled.
Thanks guys.
I worked Auto Theft for 7yrs while in LE and you're only going to keep the honest person honest.
If they want it they'll get it!
That is correct. I have been installing car security systems for 16 years. There is nothing on the market that will stop a thief. BUT often a security system will stop the PITA thieves. The punk kids who break your window for the radar detector or try for the joy ride. Personally if my car is stolen I do not want to ever see it again if it is gone for more than 20 minutes. If you decide to get one look at anything made by DEI...Viper,Python, Clifford, and a few others.
You mention the Club...that is funny. The Club can actually help a thief breaking the steering lock by giving them leverage. Also a steering wheel is made to be cut by emergency personel incase of an accident. A small pair of bolt cutters will go right through the steering wheel with little effort. I have actually read of people that had their car stolen. Then went to where it was parked and found the club laying there instead of their car.
if a real car theif wants your car, your doomed, he'll get it, and it will be gone in 60 Seconds.. (cheasy joke intended ).... dont spend too much money on an alarm, get one that honks the horn and flashes the lights... that will deter most car burglars and auto theives.... the good ones you wont deter, but there aren't many of those.... auto theives want to get it and get out without being noticed, so they will go for easy targets, unless they really want your car.. then its "bubye" to your ride

One word explains why an alarm is useless if the perp really wants it (and Honda Accords during UT Vols games are REALLY popular).......ROLLBACK!!!

I read that article also. He never really said anything about the C4/5 Corvettes antitheft system (not the alarm) which disables the starter, the ignition and the fuel system and will not allow the car to start without the correct key. If an incorrect key is used the system also starts a 4 minute timer that keeps the car from starting for that amount of time and the timer cannot be overriden even with the correct key. As far as I know the only way to steal one them is to have the correct key, a rollback/tow truck, or in the case of an 86 to have the PCM from an 85 to swap in.
Ok I get the picture...if they want it they'll get it.
But just the same, if I am interested in both a peice of mind and the chance to slow them down, any suggestions on a particular system or comments on the brands you all have ???
Thank you.
I have an after market alarm, plus a satalite tracker. Alarm systems have become so sophistcated today that thieves that steal 'on order' don't want waste time trying to defeat them. What they use is symplicity itself, and is called the 'bump and grab'! After they have decided it's your car they want, they just wait for you to unlock your car and drive off. They follow, and get behind you in slow traffic. Then they just 'bump' the back bumper, you get out to assess the situation, they get out (2 or 3 guys) pull a gun, get your keys, wallet, watch etc. and are GONE! Since they now have your wallet, they'll make a quick stop off at your house before you get home, (if they didn't shoot you already cause you wouldn't give up the keys)!

I think you're blowing that scenario out of proportion. This used to be a growing problem but it's now known as "car jacking," it's a federal offense (felony) and carries a stiff minimum sentence!

So that means it dosen't happen anymore? Point is that no matter how good the system is, if the bad guys want your car...they're going to get it!
I also work in Law Enforcement. If they want your vehicle, they will get it by stealth or violence. The best thing that I have seen in ONSTAR. They can track the vehicle while it is in motion or parked. We have caught many people with the help of ONSTAR.
