Default What would cause a "lean" condition??????

Hi everyone.

Well, the car ('99 w/75k) has been idling a little on the rough side recently so I purchased a set of wires and plugs, but having checked the cars codes, it seems as if teh car is running "lean."

I'm getting codes:

P0171 Fuel Trim System Lean bank 1-B
P0174 Fuel Trim System Lean bank 2-B

Now, if I'm not mistaken a lean coindition could be caused by a vacuum leak or by a lack of fuel being delivered into the motor.

Is there a place/procedure/diagram that i can use to troubleshoot a vacuum leak?

Is there a place/procedure/diagram that i can use to test the fuel presssure as it's delivered to the engine? Fuel pump failure, fuel filter clogged, etc.

Is there anything obvious I'm missing?

I'm pretty desperate, the old girl nearly concked out on me on the way home from work.

Thankyou for your help.

Andy.

Go buy yourself a fuel pressure gauge and hook it up to the end of the fuel rail... that would be a good start.

I'm with them, check fuel filter. Check intake track and make sure nothing's come loose (unmetered air) but likely the filter.

I'll tell you what, a few hundred for autotap is sometimes worth it. You can see alot of detail on what's going on, and it's fun to boot (I'm a bit of a geek though ).

You'll get it figured out fast!

If you have two fuel lines its mounted on left side rear frame, if you have one its in the tank on drivers side.If you have three you have had way too many beers!

Thanks for the replies.

I'll change the filter. What are your thoughts on factory vs. aftermarket? Is the factory unit going to be any different to the filter I can pick up at the local parts store? If so, I'll get one from one of the forum sponsors.

Also, where can I learn more about autotap? Is that a system that I could use to read/tune the engine? I have a 160 Themostat that i'm waiting toinstall but don't have anything to turn the fans on earlier (I'm in FL so this should be a welcome mod). Will Autotap enable me to do this?

Thanks again.

Andy.

If you want to tune, you need HP Tuner (and a lot of reading time ). AutoTap just scans what's going on.... HP Tuner lets you scan and tune. It'll run you $509 , but will give you control of your car. If you know someone with AutoTap or HPT, they can log for you and then you can look at the data.

How much fuel pressure is the factory setting? I'm going to search and see if I can find it to answer my question.

With the ignition on and the engine off, fuel pressure should be between 55-61 psi.

I had the same codes come up twice (with the "Check Engine" yellow light) on by 2002 coupe (13,000 miles) during a trip to San Francisco in city stop & go driving. I currently live in ABQ, NM (5000' altitude). I reset the computer and the codes have not come back - should I be concerned and have it checked out?

Thank you SFvetteman, I checked all the sites, including this site, Z06vette.com and LS1tech.com - including JRP's posts and came up with nothing.

Thank you again.
