I would appreciate any insight that anyone could give me regarding the current status of my climate control display. All other dash lights appear to be functioning perfectly, but the climate control is almost too dim to even see. It seems to have coincided with the installation of my window valet, although I'm going to act like that has nothing to do with it.
Please give me some ideas as what may be the problem, if you have had this happen to you.
The VCD (vacuum flourescent display) in the dual climate control just does that, it's very common, as are the little orange lights that indicate when things are on burning out. Eventually it will be so dim you won't be able to see it. A new unit is ~$150 (I think) from Fred Beans or other supporting dealers. Someone also posted a litle while back an e-bay auction where a guy was rebuilding them for ~$100 plus core.

Here's that e-bay guy. Have not heard any good or bad things about him although his feedback is 100%. <$50 but you need to be without your climate control unit for an undetermined amount of time though. Not sure what the HVAC would do, if anything with the headunit removed.

There are those HVAC moudles that "have", and there are those that "will" die. I just decided to replace that unit in our '98 and ordered it from Fichtner's in MT. Call Bob for the Forum member price.

I did it myself, it took about 2 hours and was easy to do. Got the bezel removal instructions from VE website...(thanks Ken). Yes you can send it out for a ($159) fix, but I was told the turnaround time was three weeks and since this Vette is our DD, that was unacceptable. I called Bob on a Friday AM, and the unit arrived the following Tuesday. Once you get the console bezel off, it is a plug 'n' play unit. Hope this helps you. While I had all this apart, I fixed my E-brake too. Damn...I should have ordered new brake/shifter boots from VE!

I replaced mine in under 2 hours. Got a new one from Fred Beans. In the manual, it says to disconnect the battery and then resynchronize the fobs afterwards. I did not do that but I did locate the fuse and I pulled it.
I was talking on the phone today with the guy who rebuilds them on e-bay and he says its the power supply. Apparently the VFD needs an AC current and the powe supply burns out.
