I have a 97 coupe with an interesting HVAC problem. When the temp gets hot outside, The AC stops working (never a problem with the heater). When I press the AC button, the led in it flashes three times, then goes off; the AC will not stay on. When this happens, it throws an HVAC code, and will not operate again until a) the code is cleared, and b) the temp outside is <75 degrees (who needs ac then?). Is this the control unit, a bad sensor, or what? Any and all recommendations are appreciated. Thanks.

The manual explains this in the heater operations. But if you are running your heat A/C settings in the Auto mode, pressing the AC button will do nothing, because you can't override what the Auto control is doing. Try changing to the manual mode. I run ours at that setting because I can run the A/C as I see fit. If I need defrost, I push that button and the A/C comes on untill I turn it off. Frankly, I'd prefer the old lever and cable system. I just spent $270 on a new module so I could read what the he11 the settings are. I hope this helps, if only even a little
Find out what the meaning of the code is. This might answer your question. It is possible that the system is overcharged and the pressure is to high when it is warm outside.
I dont know if you have auto climate control but on mine i have had this problem lately in the spring here.
What my issue is is that i guess under 40 degrees the A/C won't come on. My car was reading that it was under 40 on the ext temp display when it was really 60-70. Now that it is 80-90 it is reading that it is like 50-55 out so it works. I need to get it fixed but probably not anytime soon as it works for the summer so i am good to go.
As was mentioned previously, it sounds like low refrigerant. There is a low pressure sensor that shuts the system down to save the compressor. If I remember correctly, the blinking LED is an indicator of low pressure.
