Well, I am about as shocked as anyone would be from such a gain. But it is so!!
A customer of mine, Ken House, brought his 2004 A4 2.73 geared C5 to me this past week for me to install & tune a custom grind cam of my design into his car. Prior to this install and tune he tracked his car on several occasions earlier this year (cooler air) consistently running low 13's at a best trap of 106mph through his Vararam and cat back stingers. He also dyno'd 315rwhp, I believe.
I installed the cam and tuned his car this past weekend, then we headed to PIR Late Nights Sat nite to test it out. I believe his best was a 12.6 ET at a trap of 114 and change!!!! He duplicated that trap last night on several runs. The air was very humid, but I never found out what the DA was. It was high because the rest of us were trapping lower than usual (I was only able to muster a best of 12.1@117 in the Viper). In any regard, these gains shocked me a great deal. Again, this is with a cam-only change--> stock heads, stock pup and main cats exhaust, etc. Even with tuning the A4 tables the best I could, I did not think we'd get the 273s and stock converter to put this kind of power to the ground. So just imagine what 3.42s and a 3000 Yank would do along with some long tubes and AFR heads!!
We still have some tuning issues to iron out, and Ken really prefers the stock tranny and converter to behave like stock, so I will be backing off the A4 tuning to restore those characteristics. If/when Ken decides to move forward on additional mods, this car will be even more of a monster. I'm sure Ken (aka Scoundrl) will chime in to lend more of his personal input to the mod, but I do know he appreciates the power gains!! Now we just need to fine-tune the motor and get the A4 back to shifting/performing like stock again. All good!!!
PS- I tuned this engine in SD mode. That no doubt has contributed to the engine's power output. Only way to go, it seems.
That's the thing, 4mph from a cam only is respectable. This is why I am especially stoked for these results as they are quite unusual. I will be anxious to dyno his car and overlay his previous with the new to see just where in the entire curve we gained, or lossed.
OH-----PS: I just recalled that we also installed an Alta Sports UD pulley at the last moment (I dropped and damaged his stock pulley). This certainly helped a little, I'd guess ~8-10rwhp (1mph). Sorry I forgot this detail, but doesnt detract much from the luster of this cam gain!!!
This thing pulls good (at least as good as stock cam) until 3000ish rpms (about 1.5 second) then pulls like A MOTHER F@#$%#$R. I am running Z06 traps and MPH with grandpa gears and the POS stock stall converter, mufflers and cats. When we get the drivabily worked out..eeewwwiieeeeee. All those that say "Thats to big a cam for those gears, or you NEED to get a bigger stall or it'l be really slow out the hole" don't know what the F they are talking about, just spouting out forum gooo. The only real downside that can't be fixed with some more tune time is the extra under hood noise. It don't bother me but the girlfrined is not going to be too happy about it.

PS. It is really closer to 10mph when you average out all my other slips with this nights slips. The night I ran 106.5 it was about 35^ outside and the track was super nice.

I gained abot 3.5 mph in the 1/8 with a cam only swap in my 01 Z06. I have other mods, but they were already installed before I swapped cams. Not sure if I would gain more in the 1/4, but there is not one around here for me to find out. Scott
I guess that would be some useful information. Robert speced it out himself. It is a 229/235 / 585/594 113 +4 on a comp XER lobe. We also did the comp 918 springs.

Yup, that a pretty big cam Probably more than most can live with...But I like a nice lope at idle...
We're finding out (with Speed Density tuning) that this is not a big cam after all. Not as much lope at idle as you'd think, either. Just enuf to let you know something is sinister, but doesnt rock the car back and forth. With tuning, this cam pulls well in the lower rpm's, especially with the stock 2.73s and stock TC; more than you'd expect. That was a surprise for sure. But get up over 3k.....yaowza. My next cam customer has an 03 A4 with 3.15s and definitely plans 3.73s and TC. So I will go something on the order of 232/240 .595 113 +4 for him.
PS- I have a 220/220 .581/.581 114 Comp Cam available if anyone wants to buy it....
