I just re-read the NHRA requirements and I could not find anywhere discussing powdercoating. Maybe I missed it, can you point out the section. Also how does the powdercoating weaken the metal. I did not think the heat involved in powdercoating was high enough to affect the grain structure of steel. I have seen a lot of powdercoated and painted bars at the track.
Section 4:11 (roll cage) in the general regs cover this! It states and I quote
"Plating of chassis prohibited for all cars manufactured after 1/1/2003."
Powder coating is considered plating. If you powder coat the chassis or cage, there is a chance the metal could crack while the powder does not. Would you really want a cage that was cracked but you didn’t know because it was powder coated?
Hope this helps some!
PS. You can get the bars powder coated as long as you don't have the cage certified. Most tracks don't check to see if the cage or bars are certified.

Green.. Thanks for the info, I have never heard that before. My copy of the NHRA requirements is old and does not have part in section 4.11. So that must be something they have added. The explanation makes sense. The process does not weaken the bars, but might conceal a crack. So I would assume a painted bar is acceptable. Paint would not be thick enough to conceal a crack. Good stuff in this post.

painted bars are fine, it says this in the same section.
Really depends on the track. I've seen some set the hardtop limit at 11.99 and others set it at 11.50. Verts are a different story entirely.

well technically the rule was changed and your good till 11.50... so if your getting tossed from a nhra track for not having a roll bar and your running 11.50 and slower i would have a talk with who ever runs the track... and i believe if its an ihra track they have all ways been 11.50 and slower, hardtop cars dont need a roll bar..
