Default Instrument cluster question

I have a friend with an 02 Coupe that is heavily modded 6 speed car, he wanted to swap in a cluster that he has from an 01 Z06 (wants the checkered cluster with the 200mph speedo and Z06 logo) my question is.... is this a direct bolt in part, will his miles transfer from his PCM to the new cluster or will he have to have it programmed (if the miles are stored only in the cluster) also his car has HUD and I know the 01 Z's didnt.... will this cause any issues.

Thanks

Mike

Should be a bolt in. I don't believe the difference in the speedo max's will be an issue, the cluster will interpret the info from the PCM/BCM and display the correct speed. All clusters from mid '99 on had the connector to connect the HUD projector to so all you would have to do would be to swap out the dimmer switch and 7 pin cable on the Z cluster with the HUD/dimmer switch and 11 pin connector on the coupe cluster.

The only gotchya is that the miles stay with the cluster. So whatever miles are on the Z cluster will carry with it into the coupe and vice-versa. I hear this can be fixed by a flash from the dealer but I'm not sure whats entailed. I wouldn't imagine you could just take the car to them and say "I swapped out clusters and the new one has 90k on it. Can you re-flash it to be 15k?"

Thanks for the info, I will pass this on to him today, he will have to talk to a dealer first to see what the process will be to get it reflashed, maybe he could stop in....document the miles (he is out of factory warranty) and then stop in after the new cluster is in the car??

You don't have to do any reprogramming of anything. Simply remove the green printed circuit board from the original cluster and install it (the original circuit board) in the Z06 cluster. The mileage is stored in the circuit board, so no need to deal w/ a speedo shop. This is a simple swap that works---I've done it on my '98. Oh ya, the Hud will work fine. Good Luck...
