Just had the car out for a drive and my wife and I noticed the oder of fuel while driving. It seemed to come and go. Pulled the car into the garage and after a while going back out to the garage the fuel smell was pretty strong. I don't see anything leaking on the floor and don't see any spots of fuel anywhere. It's hard to pin point where it's coming from. Any suggestions?
My buddy has a 2004 Corvette. Same thing, smelled fuel all the time, especially in the garage . Took it back to dealer and they found cracks in a tube which runs between the fuel tank(s). Found others had the same problem on this forum. Warranty replaced the tanks and tube.

I had the same symptoms. It turned out to be a cracked fuel filter! The smell seemed to come from the area AROUND the fuel filler neck - the vent area - not the tank itself.
Went back out to the garage and it seems like the order is strongest by the fuel door and wheel well area. Where is the fuel filter located? 97 Vette
97 vettes (maybe others?) had a recall to replace the rubber gasket on the fuel pump/sensor units for that very reason...check with a gm dealer (with your vin # ) to see if your car was fixed...recall # was 97030 or 97031 (i think) hth BMG50
The C5's have a porus gasket at the top of the filler tube near the door. The purpose is to keep fuel fumes from leaving the tank, and EPA think I think. Anyway, if you "top off" the tank and soak the gasket, it will smell like a fuel leak. DO NOT TOP OFF!
Well had the car up on a rack today and it appears that the gasket on the fuel pump/sensor may be leaking. Both gaskets were replaced on a recall back in 97. What do think it will cost me to have replaced?

I wasn't aware of a recall on the gaskets, but if that's the case, ask your dealer if it can be done again? Likely not, but the cost involved here is primairly labor. The gaskets can be replaced without dropping the tanks, and the only parts would be the gaskets and maybe some sealent. Take your car in with as little fuel as possible because the drain time can be excessive. Ask the dealer if he will charge actual labor time rather than estimated (average) time. The thought being if your tanks are nearly empty it won't take as long?
