Back in those days I remember A lot of car having oil consumption problems. GM stated 1 qt in 1500 miles was O.K. some people did manage to get GM to replace the rings. It seems more prevelant on M6's rather than the A4's.
Did the 2000 M6 coupes have an oil consumption problem?
Yes. Not all, but some. The problem was not isolated to a particular build date. I found adding a PCV catch can and valve cover breather helped greatly.
It really affected early production 01 cars the most. My March built 01 burned 1.2 quarts every 800 miles under hard driving. Since the ring replacement it is much better (unless I go to the track)...
Just a comparisom,, my 99 C5 only uses 1/2 pint between oil changes at 7500 miles. But then I don't drive on the track but once per year and no 1/4 mile stuff.. Except when the little granny is driving. Wife has fun at the stop lights.
Did the 2000 M6 coupes have an oil consumption problem? Is so how do I tell if my car will have it? Was it a specific build date?
I have an early 2000 coupe and it used a lot of oil from day one - 1qt/1000 miles. It's not limited to a build date, nor to a model year. It's a problem with the rings/wipers. I entered an "oil watch" with my dealer, determined I used to much, and the engine was pulled and rings/wipers were changed. This is not a recall, so if you're out of warranty it will be expensive.
