Default New Info On Column Lock Recall

I took my 98 to my local dealer today to have my 04 Titanium exhaust installed. I pulled into thier service bay at 7:30 AM. I have been having problems with the pull the key and wait 10 seconds thing since they did the recall. I had sprayed some wd-40 into the lock and it was OK for the last three days. When they tried to start it after I left they kept getting the message and didn't want to run. I had told the service manager about what I read on the forum about the white relay etc. He said he spent much of his morning trying to get info from GM web site and they would give him nothing. Finally he found out a GM service Rep was in town and he came to help them. After many phone calls He had them take the harness off and reset and clear all the codes. It seems to be running and starting OK now and the Column doesn't lock because they pulled the pin I think the first time around. The SM told me GM does not know how to do a permanent fix and would contact me whenever they figure it out. If you are planning to do the recall on a 97 or 98 ( think that newer ones may be different?) I think I might wait a while? Maybe it will work with the Black relay but they do not seem to know?? How mine is working now I don't know but the harness is out and it is back to original hookup minus a pin and I am getting no messages. I have an automatic trans.
PS: The Titanium exhaust I put on only had 300 miles on it and it sounds much better and is much lighter.

Hope GM figures this out before something else goes wrong.

Do you have an automatic (A4) or a manual (M6) ?

AFAIK, the only thing they do for the M6's is flash the PCM with revised firmware code.

I have a A4 Auto matic, I don't know how it is working now except they said they took the harness off and reset all the codes, pluged the original stuff back and GM will contact me when they figure out how to fix it? Not sure what I have or what is going to happen next? Car has 37K on it and never had a problem until this recall. I'm glad it gave out for them so now they know that they have a problem. Before I told him the Service Manager had heard nothing. He said GM has no info on the internet site they use.

Does anyone know if I am OK now or will it fail again???????

PS: They did F it up for sure!

On 98 autos they remove the entire locking plate, you should be able to turn the wheel even with the ignition off, on mine they reflashed my pcm because it had not seen a dealer since January 01. My service advisor said the initial 6 speed fix was not working and they were engineering a new one , this was three weeks ago.

My Column is free and it is running real good. Wonder why they had to put the Harness in if everything works OK now they took it out? I thought I would get dervice column look messages? It is an automatic.

I bought my vette 2 years ago. The only thing it needed fixed was...the "Service Column Lock" error on the DIC. The steering wheel never locked up or did anything else bad. The previous owner took it to the dealership in Oakdale Ca. to get it fixed. So when I went to pick it up a few days later on a Friday night to drive home, there were all these techs trying to figure out why my car would cut itself out as soon as it moved. They were flashing my pcm and couldn't figure it out. They couldn't contact GM as they were closed because we are a few hours behind. Long story short...It was ready to go Monday afternoon and I haven't had a problem since. I do hear it still working in my steering column. I have had 4 recall notices sent to bring it in...but that won't happen. I'll install the CLB per the advice read right here in these forums.

I am not sure how the CLB works but that would be the way to go, GM doesn't seem to have a fix, at least for my 98. Although it seems OK now.

BTW...mines an MN6. So the CLB is the only alternative. No probs yet as I stated above. I have a feeling I better get ready eventually...
