Default Knock sensor went out too?

As if my a/c dying wasn't bad enough, the knock sensor decided to short out as well. The quote to fix it was in the ballpark of $800 i believe. Is there any way to do it for cheaper? I've done a lot of intake work on older cars like my 69 mustang i used to have, but nothing newer like the vette. Should this even be attempted to save a little cash?

Swapping a knock sensor is easy if you've done any work on cars before. The intake needs to come off and they sit right underneath it. I can send you the procedure if you email me at edbon@adelphia.net

Here's a shot of my valley cover where the sensors reside in the two deep wells. This is after removing the intake. Also, depending on your MY, you may find a coolant tube running from the front to rear coolant taps over the valley cover.


Here's a shot of the underside of the valley cover. (Doesn't need to come off to take the sensors out.) Btw, this is a Z06 valley cover which is a bit different than the LS1 cover as it incorporates the PCV element.

I agree. I've replaced my knock sensors and it was about a two hour job start to finish and I took it really slow. The hardest part is actually getting the knock sensors out as you have to pinch them in a certain way to get them to unclip.

What normally happens in a case such as yours is they get pinched between the valley cover and the intake and chaff through until they short.

My guess is that you can do this for under $100.

There is a TSB on this. The knoock sensors can fail if the get wet. This is common on engines which are washed by the owner. The TSB describes how to build a little dam around the sensors to keep this from ocurring again.

sorry to hijack, i do have some input though. i am not one of the more mechanically inclined, but i did swap the knock sensors on my vert two weeks ago. took me closer to 4 hours start to finish, but my problem that took a bunch of time was getting that PITA little tube connected up to the back of the intake. finally got my 12yr old son to help. small hands make a big difference. thanks chase.

now my question is how does oil get into the deepwell that the sensor goes in. i had the code, but thought i must have gotten some water in there after spraying down the engine compartment. turns out, one of the sensors had oil all over it. i didnt really notice any oil spots on the valley so i dont see how it got in unless it came up from the bottom. jake
