98 engine replacement with a 2001 Z06 engine - work ok?
Hi,
My 98's engine is on its last legs. Another member is selling his 2001 Z06 engine for a great price. I think I will take it. I will need to have my computer reprogrammed. Will this setup work? Has anyone done it?
Should be a piece of cake stock for stock if you use your exhaust manifiolds and the 01 longblock. Should gain a few (40) hp. The tune difference should be a quick PE richen but minor as your car is likey a bit rich.
2 days ago I started having some serious knock. I took it in for a check with my mechanic at Race Street Rally. He thinks a piston is about to go. I has run great and strong up until now.
i replaced the motor in my 97 with a 2003 ls6 from intake to pan, best money you can spend. got the computer reprogrammed and thats it. car runs great.
Thx for the feedback guys. I am going to go for it. Its funny too. I just put new rims 19" front and 20" rear and a Corsa exhaust on. Then the engine goes.
I almost convinced myself to buy the C6 vert. but too many memories in my C5.

Interesting. Did you do the work yourself? Can you just swap a z06's PCM over and "plug and play" it?
I relaced my high mileage LS1 with a low mileage 2002 LS6, after 3 cylinders went bad. The tuner just switched all my mods, LPE LS6 heads, aftermarket cam and everything but the timing chain, over to the ZO6's long block. Great idea!!!
No problems to report after a few thousand miles into it.
BTW, FWIW...why would you settle for a 385 hp 2001 model when you can get 405 hp (assuming you're stock) with a 2002 and up? Just curious.
If you already have a cam and upgrade heads like I did, it may be a mute point. Anyway...I think it's a very good switch!!
I would like a new LS6 but I need a new engine right now and cant wait.
I think with a few mods I should get up over 400HP pretty easy.
Any thoughts on a new clutch?

Just a word of caution, weren't the 01 Z06s having oil consumption problems? The factory replaced rings as I recall; need to check if this one had the rings changed. Other than that matter, the swap ought to work great. Good luck.
