Default Weird squeal

I've got a weird squealing noise coming from inside what would be the clutch housing, on a traditiional engine/clutch arrangement. But since this is a 1998, C5, A4, there's nothing in there but a starter ring gear, and a driveshaft coupler. I've looked in the inspection hole with the engine running and stopped, and can find no evidence of anything rubbing or dragging. Anybody got any ideas?

I had the same problem on my car and it turned out to be my pilot bearing that was DESTROYED. When I pulled the drive shaft there were needle bearings and metal dust that poured out.

Thanks Jackal, that may be the problem!! How much trouble was it to replace? Did it screw up the driveshaft? By the way, Mine's an automatic, so I don't know if the bearing's the same.

I dont know what the auto has, but it hurt the drive shaft and I had to have the tip replaced on it. It only cost 65 dollars for the tip, but I removed the drive line and took the torque tube apart myself.
